How does the Gearbox work?

The Gear Box: What is it?

The gearbox is fundamental to the operation of an automobile. Whether it's a manual or automatic transmission, it moves your vehicle forward and backward by transmitting information from the engine to the wheels. It's also the element that helps your car reveal its performance regardless of the road conditions on which you travel.

The roles assumed by your Speed Box

The engine of your car makes several thousand rotations expressed in rpm. This power must be transmitted to the wheels in order for the vehicle to move. This is the role of the transmission, a set that includes the clutch, the differential and, above all, the gearbox. The gearbox has the job of adjusting the speed of rotation of the wheels according to that of the engine and vice versa. If you engage a higher gear, the car will automatically accelerate and the engine will also run faster. Conversely, if you shift one gear down, the car will slow down and the engine will rotate less.

Zoom on the Manual Box

Usually with 5 or 6 gears, the manual transmission is fundamental to the transmission. When you manipulate your lever to engage the gear of your choice, parts such as the fork and the sliding gear (also called the synchro hub) make movements that allow the sprocket to position itself correctly on the secondary transmission shaft. The secondary shaft can then rotate and drive the wheels in its motion. Note that if you drive in neutral, all the sprockets on the main shaft will rotate freely but the shaft itself remains inert. This explains why the car is stationary.

It is important to engage / disengage the clutch correctly so that the desired gear is engaged properly. Otherwise, your car may lose performance.

How the Auto Box works

The automatic or robotised gearbox ensures a certain driving comfort as the car itself adjusts the gear ratios. There's a converter instead of the traditional clutch. This torque converter is equipped with a hydraulic pump. The flow of oil it generates sends commands to the transmission system so that the ratio can be changed according to driving conditions.

I have a gearbox problem: What can I do?

Wear and tear on a gearbox can be detected by hearing and the behaviour of the vehicle. Pay attention to the sounds (cracking, hissing...) emitted by your vehicle when you manipulate your gear lever. If you have difficulty shifting gears or if you smell like a burning smell every time you engage your gear, it is essential to have the gearbox checked by a professional.

A gearbox problem negatively impacts the operation of your car, which can jeopardize your safety.
