Gearbox broken? We help you identify and order your model
Today, this luxury 4×4 is sold under the GLE name, and its all-wheel drive system is mostly complemented by a 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox. The weight and versatility of such a machine call for heavy-duty mechanics. However, even the most reliable of brands can run into problems.
Are you experiencing problems with the gearbox in your Mercedes M-Class? EDEN BOITES shares its top tips for repairing Mercedes M-Class gearboxes.
Gearbox features in the history of the Mercedes M-Class
It has taken three generations and three design revisions for the M-Class to establish Mercedes models as a clear benchmark for consumers.
1997: Type W163
This 2.1-ton SUV requires a powerful engine. That's why the brand has equipped it with engine blocks from 2.3 to 5.4 L, developing 150 to 347 hp. A 5-speed automatic or 6-speed manual gearbox is available for this first jet, with a steering-wheel-mounted lever.
2005 to 2011: Type W164
The comfortable baroudeur is equipped with the Off Road pack, which allows the ground clearance to be varied electronically. Power output increases with engines ranging from 3.0 to 6.2 L and from 190 to 510 hp. As for the Mercedes M-Class gearbox, the manual transmission disappears to be replaced exclusively by a 7-speed automatic.
2011 to 2015: Type W166
More dynamic, more elegant and more luxurious, this latest edition is available in 3 petrol versions and two diesels. The innovative7G-Tronic gearbox accompanies engines from 2.1 to 5.4, delivering 204 to 525 hp.
How the transmission works in the Mercedes M-Class
The ML is an all-wheel-drive off-road vehicle. Its power distribution system consists of the gearbox and transfer case.
ML gearbox
The 7G-Tronic is a torque-converter automatic gearbox developed by Mercedes. On a 4×4 of this weight, it offers three advantages: comfort, responsiveness and fuel economy. The seven gears limit rev jumps during gear changes, and the ECU optimizes torque with fluidity. Power is transferred to the wheels, then directed to the transfer caseto adjust gears.
ML transfer case
This element distributes power between the front and rear axles, acting like a differential between the wheels on the same axle, to adjust the rate of rotation. Positioned between the gearbox output and the axles, it regulates torque according to driving conditions, especially on rough or steep terrain.
If one of these two components malfunctions, the vehicle may experience traction problems and change its navigation behavior.
Gearbox failure warning signs on the Mercedes M-Class
On a car in this category, the slightest fault is felt and initiates an error message, or even an extensive notification. But at first, it's hard to distinguish between a faulty ECU on the gearbox of an ML 250 2.2 CDI, for example, or a problem with an ML 350 3.0 CDI 4×4 transfer case. There are a number of situations that should alert you:
- Gear shifting is not straightforward;
- The car only runs in firstgear;
- A rolling or bumping noise can be heard during gear changes;
- Reverse does not engage;
- The vehicle loses power and does not shift into the appropriate gear;
- Oil leaks under the vehicle.
You must contact a brand specialist for a diagnosis.
Practical tips for repairing the Mercedes M-Class gearbox
Depending on the type of vehicle, your mechanic can consider various breakdown hypotheses.
A simple fault in an ECU, circuit board or connector is sometimes enough to trigger damage.
The condition of thegearbox oil is also one of the criteria taken into account in the event of a problem. Every time you change the oil, check the radiator and the temperature of the lubricant. If you've neglected this maintenance, or if thewear on the parts is beyond repair, you may need to replace the gearbox or transfer case.
