Fiat Panda gearbox: what makes it special?

To identify the exact model of your gearbox, you need to know its code. This can be found on the transmission housing. We advise you to ask a mechanic, as the number is rarely visible when opening the hood, and a bridge is necessary. Knowing the model and technical specifications of your Panda will also help you determine which gearbox is right for you.

The first-generation Panda, marketed until 2010, has a power output of between 30 and 45 hp, depending on the model. All vehicles feature a 4-speed manual transmission. The only exception is the 4×4 version, with a displacement of 1.1 and a power output of 54 hp, which has a 5-speed manual gearbox, or a VTC automatic gearbox.

The Panda II is equipped with a manual gearbox. The 1.1 and 1.3 displacements, rated at 60 or 70 hp, feature a 5-speed gearbox. More recent models, marketed from 2008 onwards, with a displacement of 1.4 and 100 hp, have a 6-speed gearbox. This generation's 4×4 model(1.4 and 100 hp) also has a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Finally, if your Panda dates from after 2012, this means it's from the 3rd generation. These models are equipped with a 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmission , like the gearbox on the Fiat Panda 1.0 70 hp Hybrid BSG. On the other hand, some Panda III models are equipped with an automatic gearbox: this is the case with the gearbox on the Fiat Panda 0.9 Turbo Essence.

How do I know if my gearbox has a problem?

Whether automatic or manual, when your gearbox malfunctions, symptoms appear. Look out for these signs and note when they occur. When you shift gears? When starting up? When accelerating?

Difficulty shifting gears is one of the most common signals. Similarly, a hard clutch pedal, a shaky gearshift or skipping gears are all signs that your gearbox has a problem.

Also, pay attention to sounds. Cracking or clunking noises should give you cause for alarm. If they come from the gearbox, they may indicate wear on components such as pinions or bearings.

On the other hand, an oil stain is a clear indicator of a leak. Similarly, if the warning light on your Dualogic automatic gearbox doesn't light up, there's no doubt about it: it needs repair.

What repairs are possible?

To determine the problem, an inspection of the component parts is essential. To do this, it is often necessary to dismantle the gearbox. This is a complex operation, which is why we suggest you call in a professional mechanic. He'll diagnose the problem and suggest possible solutions.

Here are some common problems and associated repairs:

  • Faulty parts or worn mechanics: this may concern a malfunction in the clutch plate,drive shaft, pump or seal. The garage will replace the parts;
  • Faulty linkage mechanism: this key element provides the link between the gearshift and the transmission's internal components. In the event of a problem, the linkage can be replaced;
  • Faulty mechatronics: the gearbox's electronic components and integrated software can fail. It is possible to replace the mechatronics without necessarily changing the gearbox completely;
  • Clogged oil: this leads to a lack of lubrication in the mechanics, causing gear shifting difficulties. The solution here is to change the transmission fluid;
  • Lack of oil: if the gearbox oil reservoir is empty, due to a loose cap for example, there's a good chance that shifting gears will be difficult. In this case, the mechanic will simply top it up.

These operations do not involve replacing the gearbox. However, if a change of components isn't enough, you'll have no choice but to buy a new gearbox.
