Jeep Cherokee gearbox: maintenance and repair

 An all-terrain vehicle par excellence, the Jeep Cherokee stands out for its high traction and obstacle-clearing capacity. On the road since 1974, the SUV from the famous American automaker has undergone numerous versions and improvements. The Cherokee KL, which went into production in 2013, marks the vehicle's fifth generation.

Special features of the Jeep Cherokee

Depending on the model and generation, the Jeep Cherokee offers three modes of power transmission from the engine to the wheels:

  • A front-wheel drive transmission means that the front wheels of the vehicle are driven;
  • The rear wheels take on this role in the case of rear-wheel drive;
  • With all-wheel drive, all four wheels are driven. This means that the vehicle is also equipped with a transfer case, responsible for distributing engine power evenly over the two drive axles.

The latest generation of the Jeep Cherokee, the KL, is available with either all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive, depending on your needs and driving habits.

Two engine options are also available. The diesel version is powered by the Multijet II engine from the Stellantis group. For petrol, the brand offers several engines, including the 3.2L V6 Pentastar 272 hp produced by Chrysler (also a member of Stellantis).

There's also a choice of gearboxes: for the Jeep Cherokee KL, you can opt for a nine-speed automatic or the equivalent six-speed manual. By way of comparison, the previous model, the Cherokee KK produced from 2007 to 2012, only offered a six-speed manual gearbox.

The right daily reflexes for a well-preserved gearbox

A gearbox requires more or less maintenance, depending on whether it's automatic or manual. The former is the simplest, as your vehicle has no clutch system. You just have to make sure you never change gear (park or reverse) while your Jeep Cherokee is still moving, as you could seriously damage it.

A manual gearbox requires more vigilance on a daily basis:

  • Always use neutral at red lights and in traffic jams. Keeping your foot down on the clutch pedal damages the transmission system (as well as making you tired);
  • Avoid keeping your hand on the gearshift lever, as the constant pressure on the gearbox establishes contact between the fork and the gears and can prematurely damage them;
  • Depress the clutch pedal firmly and completely;
  • Keep your eyes on the road to anticipate gear changes as far as possible and avoid unnecessary manipulation. In particular, don' t skip gears when downshifting.

Whether your Jeep Cherokee is fitted with a manual or automatic gearbox, regularly inspect the underside of the vehicle for oil leaks. Gearbox oil is essential for proper lubrication of the transmission system, and an insufficient level of oil can damage the whole system. For this reason, a transmission oil change should be considered: every 250,000 kilometers for a manual gearbox, and every 60,000 kilometers for an automatic gearbox.

Warning signs

There are several indicators of a gearbox problem that should alert you while driving. Among the most common signals are squealing noises when disengaging the clutch or starting up, excessive vibrations in the passenger compartment, jumping gears, or a general loss of vehicle power.

It's important to identify the times when these events occur, so that you can report them to a professional mechanic. These observations will help to pinpoint the cause of the problem and facilitate diagnosis. In most cases, it is not necessary to completely replace the gearbox or transfer case if a breakdown occurs.
