When it was launched in 1983, the Micra's cubic lines were characteristic of the period: this small, easy-to-drive city car was highly reliable. Building on the success of its first generation, the Japanese autom aker launched a second version a few years later, the Micra K11, which was voted "European Car of the Year" in 1993: the model adopted rounder shapes and a more spacious interior.

Gearbox broken? We help you identify and order your model
Despite its reputation for reliability, the Micra's transmission can sometimes malfunction: EDEN BOITES offers you a few solutions to deal with this.
What are the main causes of gearbox failure?
There are several possible causes of gearbox failure:
- Deterioration of the bearings is manifested by whistling noises when engine speed is increased. These noises generally disappear when the clutch is disengaged;
- Damage to synchronizer rings is characterized by cracking noises during gear changes;
- Differential failure can be recognized by the appearance of abnormal noises during acceleration or engine braking;
- Incorrectly adjusted control cables can lead to resistance when shifting gears;
- When sprocket teeth are worn, a whirring noise may be heard during driving;
- Damage to the clutch or flywheel is manifested by vibrations felt in neutral, difficulty in depressing the clutch pedal or a feeling of slipping when starting;
- An oil leak prevents sufficient lubrication of gearbox parts, resulting in premature wear.
What's the Nissan Micra's transmission like?
On all five generations of the Nissan Micra, the transmission is front-wheel drive. Whatever the type of engine chosen, the transmission can be manual or automatic.
The mechanical gearbox is available with five speeds, as on the 1.0 ECO 3P , and with up to six speeds on the 1.0 DIG-T 117 TEKNA. The second generation is offered with a TVC Xtronic automatic gearbox, found on the 1.0 IG-T 92 XTRONIC ACENTA or the 1.0 IG-T 100 VISIA PACK XTRONIC. This system enables the engine's gear ratio to be varied continuously: it can be magnetic, toroidal or belt-driven. Like any standard automatic gearbox, there's no need for a clutch pedal or gearshift lever!
What are gearbox repairs?
When the first signs of gearbox failure appear, contact a mechanic to obtain a precise and reliable diagnosis of the fault. Don't hesitate to describe precisely the symptoms and sensations experienced when shifting gears and driving: this information will help the expert to narrow down his search more quickly. Depending on the problem encountered, repairs can be as follows:
- If an oil leak is detected, replacing the transmission SPI seals, or the housing if it is cracked, can be an effective solution. Changing the gearbox oil will also reinforce the sealing of the seals;
- If you can't shift gears, it's probably a clutch or linkage problem, requiring replacement of the connecting rod or cables, depending on the type of gearbox your vehicle has. If the clutch is at fault, it's the disc, the clutch mechanism or the flywheel that need replacing;
- Gearbox bearings may need to be changed in response to excessive vibration or unusual noises;
- Replacing internal gearbox parts such as gear teeth, selector forks or drive shafts are general repairs that can solve global problems.
