Only a professional craftsman will be able to confirm what type of fault it is and how to repair it. However, you can anticipate the problem by considering replacing the whole box. Although this is a radical solution, it is sometimes the only reliable option in the long term.

How to identify a compatible standard exchange Skoda Octavia gearbox?

The question of compatibility is essential, whether you opt for a used gearbox or a standard exchange to repair a Skoda Octavia gearbox. Indeed, you will find many references in shop. However, each one is designed to fit specific versions of the Octavia which celebrated its 25th anniversary in September 2021. As you can imagine, such a long existence has been marked by multiple facelifts that have renewed the appearance and performance of the saloon.

In fact, the first model appeared in 1959. It was available as a saloon, production of which ceased in 1964, and as an estate car, which remained in production until 1971. The 1.1L and 1.2L petrol engines were coupled to a 4-speed manual gearbox.

After a long silence, the Skoda Octavia was back in service in 1996. It is produced in seven different engine options. In petrol, there is a choice of a 1.4L 75hp, a 1.6L 102hp and a 2.0L 116hp unit with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 1.8L T 150hp unit is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. In diesel, Skoda has chosen a 1.9L TDI block offered in three power ratings: 90hp and 110hp to go with the 5-speed manual gearbox and 130hp to go with the 6-speed manual gearbox.

From 2004 onwards, theOctavia runs with new engine blocks. The 1.4L 75 hp, 1.6L 102 hp and 1.6L FSI 115 hp petrol units are supported by a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 1.8L TSI 160 hp and 2.0L FSI 150 hp engines, on the other hand, have a 6-speed manual gearbox. The diesel family now has only two variants: a 1.9 TDi PD 105 bhp with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 2.0 TDi PD 140 bhp with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The Gearbox automatic Skoda Octavia makes its appearance after the 2008 restyling. A BVA6 is available as an option on the 1.8 TSI 160 hp, 1.9 TDI 105 hp and 2.0 TDI 140 hp units. If you drive a vehicle of this generation with a 1.2L TSI 105hp, 1.4L TSI 122hp or 1.6 TDI 105hp unit, your Octavia may be equipped with a 7-speed automatic transmission. The basic BVM5 and BVM6 are still available.

New facelift in 2013. The new engines are based on those of the VW Golf. They are not only more numerous, but also more powerful. And for the first time ever, the Skoda Octavia is available in an AWD version. However, there are no major changes to the gearboxes. As standard, the vehicle is still delivered with a 5 or 6-speed gearbox. As an option, there is a choice of 6 or 7 speed BVA.

From 2017, the 1.2L petrol blocks will disappear. They will be replaced by a turbocharged 1.0L 115hp version with a BVM6 as standard and a BVA7 as an option. The 1.4 TSI 150 hp block is also available with a standard 6-speed automatic transmission or a 7-speed automatic transmission as an option. The 1.6 TDI 115 hp diesel is the only one to retain the standard 5-speed automatic transmission. As an option, it comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0 TDi 150 hp engine is only available with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This new generation is also marked by the arrival of the 1.4L G-TEC 110 bhp unit, which is equipped with a 7-speed automatic transmission.

The BVM5 disappears completely in 2019. From now on, the Skoda Octavia leaves the factory with either a BVM6, a BVA6 or a BVA7.

For the latest generation, the sedan is delivered with a DSG type gearbox, which operates on the principle of a dual-clutch transmission.

Can I solve my problem Gearbox Skoda Octavia myself?

We want to make it clear from the outset that you cannot consider repairing the machine on your own. Don't even waste your time looking for online tutorials, as these could mislead you. In fact, it is common for several types of breakdown to manifest themselves with the same sign. If you hear strange noises, it could be because the oil is clogged, which means that a Skoda Octavia gearbox change would allow you to get back on the road with peace of mind. However, these noises could also mean that some mechanical components are broken. A diagnostic error would inevitably lead to an inappropriate approach, which means that the repair will not have the desired consequences.

If you have a gearbox failure, it is essential that you contact a professional. Feel free to make an appointment with a local craftsman, to visit one of the workshops recommended by your dealer or to choose another craftsman altogether. The important thing is that they have the skills required to make an accurate and totally reliable diagnosis.

When you come to a professional repairer, he will certainly ask you some questions. For example: What makes you think you have a problem with your Skoda Octavia cruise control? How long have you been noticing problems with your gearbox? Are the symptoms intermittent or continuous? Have you tried to repair it yourself? Etc. Try to answer as precisely as possible, as the information you provide will enable the craftsman to refine his diagnosis.

In some cases, it is essential to dismantle the gearbox in order to understand what is wrong and things become even more complex. Disassembly and subsequent assembly must be carried out in strict accordance with the manufacturer's diagram. This requires a solid knowledge of the subject matter and state-of-the-art tools to ensure that the work is carried out properly.

After an in-depth study of the situation, the professional will be able to diagnose the problem and advise you on the best solution. If the damage is too extensive, replacement is usually the best option. In this case, we recommend that you make the purchase yourself, taking care to choose a reference that is compatible with your vehicle.

Keep in mind that any problems with the Skoda Octavia gearbox could reoccur if you neglect maintenance. Ask your garage for advice on how often to change the oil in your Gearbox (or a BVM). Ask your garage to advise you on other ways to avoid breakdowns.
