Which Passat gearbox is right for my car?
The Passat saga officially began in 1973, when the first generation, also known as the B1, was launched on the European market. Available as a two- or four-door, the car was produced as standard with a four-speed manual gearbox. When it arrived on the Brazilian market, the Passat was offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox. This generation, which was produced until 1980, had a fairly wide choice of engines. The 1.3L 55hp, 1.5L 75hp / 85hp and 1.6L 75hp / 85hp petrol units coexist with a 1.5L 50hp diesel unit and a 110hp GLI unit. An optional automatic transmission (BVA) is available for the 75hp and 85hp units.
The Passat B2 was launched in 1981. Its silhouette was lengthened and its circular headlights were replaced by rectangular models that gave it more character. The changes were not only aesthetic, as this second generation came with new engines. The 1.3L 60hp, 1.6L 72hp, 1.6L 75hp petrol units and the 1.6d 54hp diesel unit come with a BVM4. The 1.8i and 1.8L 90hp, 2.0L and 2.2L 115hp engines, as well as the 1.6L 69hp diesel unit, are fitted with BVM5 as standard.
The B3 platform was produced from 1988 to 1993. For this third generation of the Passat, VW chose to increase the power ranges of the various engines. From now on, the vehicle will have a minimum of 68 bhp in diesel and 72 bhp in petrol for a maximum power of 174 bhp. All versions are equipped with a BVM5, with the exception of the Passat 2.8L V6 174 bhp, which is delivered as standard with a BVA4.
From the fourth generation B4 onwards, BVA4 is available as an option on all petrol engines that come with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. In contrast, all diesel engines are exclusively associated with a BVM5.
The Passat B5 gearbox produced from 1996 to 2005 is changing. The standard BVM5 is still in use. However, a BVA5 is now available as an option on the 2.8L V6 180hp block and a BVM6 is fitted to vehicles fitted with a 2.5L TSi 150hp unit. The Gearbox Passat W8, which is the top of the range version of the B5, is either a BVM6 or a 5-speed Tiptronic.
Following a restyling of the B5 in 2000, new engines were introduced. The same engine block can be offered in different power ratings and with different transmission systems. The Passat 1.9 tdi 100 hp gearbox, for example, can be either a BVM5 or a BVA4. As for the Passat tdi 130 hp gearbox, again with a 1.9L block, it can be a BVM5 or a BVM6.
The Passat B6 gearbox is the same as that fitted to the sixth generation of the family saloon. A total of 13 petrol engines, nine diesel units and two LNG-fuelled units are being introduced. Six-speed transmissions are gaining ground. The Gearbox Passat 2.0 tdi 140 hp, for example, is available in two variants: a standard BVM6 and an optional BVA6. However, the BVM5 is still present, for example in the 1.6L MPI 102 hp units or as Gearbox VW Passat 1.9 tdi 105 hp. The biggest novelty is the appearance of the DSG gearbox The most important new feature is the introduction of the 7-speed gearbox, which can be found on the 1.4L TSI/TSI BMT 122 hp and 1.8L TSI 160 hp units.
A coupe version emerges from the factory in 2009. It comes standard with a BVM6. However, a 2009 Passat cc automatic gearbox is available as an option. This is either a BVA6 or a DSG-type BVA7.
From 2010, the B7 is produced and marketed by Volkswagen. The petrol units are combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox. In diesel, this new Passat is offered with a BVM6 or a BVA6. From 2014, a BVA7 is also available as an option on many engines.
The Passat B8 went into production in 2015 and then underwent a restyling in 2019. Initially, it is paired with a standard BVM6 and an optional BVA7. Now Volkswagen is offering optional Travel Assist technology on the latest generation Passat . The system ensures that safe distances and trajectory are maintained, making driving easier. Similarly, you can enjoy the benefits of semi-automatic steering offered by Emergency Assist technology should you find yourself unable to react. These innovative solutions are combined with a dual-clutch DSG gearbox. With power ranging from 122 hp to 200 hp, these latest models ensure a relaxing and comfortable experience, provided that all parts are in perfect working order, especially the transmission.
As you can see, the gearboxes in the various generations of Passats have undergone considerable development in order to improve performance and meet the most demanding driving requirements. It is therefore essential to ensure that the replacement part is compatible with the exact model you are driving, as transmission systems cannot be interchanged at random. For example, you cannot mount Gearbox Passat on T3 and vice versa. This would impair the functioning of your vehicle.
What are my options for repairing the Passat gearbox?
Let's take the example of a sixth generation Passat . If you hear a noise Gearbox Passat B6, it may be a fault in the linkage Gearbox Passat B6 just as the problem Gearbox Passat B6 may be caused by the oil Gearbox Passat B6. Filling or changing the Passat B6 gearbox is one of the possible solutions, but it is not the only one.
Also, the removal Gearbox Passat tdi 130 is not a systematic option. Indeed, if the breakdown is caused by dirt or a drop in the oil level Gearbox Passat tdi 130, there is no need to completely dismantle the transmission component.
In all cases, it is difficult, if not impossible, to assess the extent of the fault without specific know-how and skills. For example, you need to understand the structure of the Gearbox Passat tdi 130 support, identify the right lubricant for an oil change Gearbox Passat B5 or know the right programming for the Gearbox VW Passat automatic.
