Whether you've opted for an automatic or a manual gearbox, you're not immune to potential problems. Is driving your BMW M2 no longer a pleasure, because your gearbox is malfunctioning ? EDEN BOITES Here's how to remedy the situation

What are the features of the BMW M2 gearbox?

Launched in 2016, the first-generation BMW M2 (F87) features a 6-speed manual gearbox. This is found in the 2016 365hp M2 Coupé and the 2017 370hp M2 Coupé. The first generation is also equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This is notably the case with the 450hp M2 Coupé 3.0 or the M2 Compétition Édition Héritage, reserved for the French market.

For the second generation (G87), BMW offers a twin-turbocharged in-line 6-cylinder engine developing 460 hp. The 7-speed gearbox is replaced by an 8-speed M Steptronic gearbox. The M2 Coupé 3.0i 460 hp BVAS8 is equipped with it. For purist drivers, the 6-speed manual gearbox is available as a free option

When should the BMW M2 gearbox be repaired?

A car's transmission system transfers power from the engine to the wheels via the gearbox. When the gearbox is damaged, driving can be rough and even dangerous. You can recognize the obvious signs.

With a manual gearbox, if you hear a noise such as grinding when you change gear, you should be alarmed, as a synchronizer may be damaged or jammed. If, on the other hand, you find it difficult to change gear, there are several possible causes:

  • the gear lever
  • gear locking system ;
  • problems with the pressure plate

Jumping gears, a car that refuses to start after depressing the clutch pedal or loss of oil are also symptoms of a gearbox problem.

If your BMW M2 is fitted with an automatic gear box and experiences a malfunction, you may sometimes notice an abnormal time between gear changes, unusual sounds in Drive mode or in reverse. A burning smell during gear changes can also be a warning sign, usually caused by overheating of the transmission fluid

If you see stains on the underside of your car, it could be transmission fluid loss. Finally, inadequate gear changes or jerking of the gearbox should also raise questions about its technical condition.

How do I repair a BMW M2 gearbox?

To identify the nature of the problem, it's necessary to carry out a thorough inspection of the gearbox components . To do this, you'll need to call in a mechanic to remove the gearbox. All gearbox components will be dismantled and analyzed. After this operation, the professional will draw up a diagnosis and provide you with solutions.

The most common repairs are as follows:

  • Changing the transmission oil: a lack of oil or contaminated oil causes gear shifting difficulties, so it is necessary to fill or change the oil;
  • Converter replacement: when the torque converter is defective, it may cause reduced acceleration or vibration;
  • Synchronizer replacement: worn synchronizer rings are usually the cause of a noisy gearshift;
  • Clutch replacement: a damaged clutch makes it difficult to change gears with a manual gearbox, or causes abrupt gear changes with an automatic;
  • Changing SPI seals: a worn seal can cause hydraulic leakage and loss of pressure;
  • Electronic reset: electronic malfunctions are sometimes the cause of gearbox problems, so a reset is recommended.

Should these interventions fail to repair your BMW M2's gearbox, you will inevitably have to buy a new one.

Is it always necessary to completely replace a gearbox?

Only the professional who has carried out the diagnosis will be able to tell you whether a complete gearbox change is essential. If this is the case, don 't hesitate to order it from EDEN BOITES! You'll pay less if you buy it yourself, rather than from your garage.
