Alfa Romeo 159 gearbox: Solutions for frequent breakdowns

In 2005, the Alfa 159 took over from the 156 as a family sedan. Characterized by sporty lines and typically Latin styling, the Alfa 159 quickly found its place alongside vehicles in the same segment, such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Lexus IS, which had already been on the market for several years.

How to prevent Alfa Romeo 159 gearbox breakdowns?

Knowing the different transmission modes of the Alfa Romeo 159

The Alfa 159 was marketed with eight different engines, including five petrols and three diesels.

The particularly outstanding performance of gasoline engines is due to the use of the combustion system known as JTS. The 1.9 and 2.2 JTS engines are both available with a six-speed manual transmission; from 2006, the Fiat Group's trademark Selespeed robotized gearbox is available as an option on the 2.2 JTS. The 159 equipped with the 3.2 JTS V6 can be chosen in all-wheel drive with a Q-Tronic 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox, or in front-wheel drive with the only six-speed mechanical gearbox, as is the case with the 1750 TBI 200 SPORT.

As for diesel engines, all versions are available with a six-speed manual gearbox. The Q-Tronic automatic gearbox is optional on the 1.9 JTDm 16V and the 2.4 JTDm 20V , giving the latter a top speed of 225 km/h. With a six-speed manual gearbox, the 200 hp version of the 2.4 JTDm 20V offers a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.

Adopt smooth driving and good reflexes

A manual gearbox requires greater care than an automatic, since the gearshift mechanism is totally under the driver's control. The risk of damage is greater if the driver does not use the gearbox correctly, or makes sudden movements. Here is a non-exhaustive list of principles to observe:

  • Depress the clutch pedal firmly before changing gear to avoid premature wear of the clutch disc and release bearing;
  • Once the gear is engaged at the lever, gradually take your foot off the clutch pedal and gently depress the gas pedal;
  • Pay close attention to the engine noise and the number of revolutions per minute displayed on the dial to choose the right gear at the right time. Ideally, you should change gear at around 2500 rpm;
  • Use the neutral position when the vehicle is at a standstill, waiting at traffic lights or in traffic jams;
  • Avoid skipping a gear when downshifting.

When the Alfa 159 is equipped with an automatic gearbox, the driver must be attentive to his environment and to other motorists, in order to anticipate acceleration or deceleration as effectively as possible. Aggressive driving, with sudden braking or acceleration, can lead to premature wear of the system.

What should I do if my Alfa Romeo gearbox stops working?

Observe the parts of my gearbox

If your Alfa 159 begins to show signs of malfunction, such as creaking noises, resistance to shifting gears, or a general loss of performance, don't hesitate to open your hood to find out what's going on:

  • Check the level and appearance of the gearbox oil using the dipstick. Be careful not to confuse it with the engine oil dipstick;
  • Make sure yourtransmission oil seals are watertight, as deterioration can cause gearbox oil leaks;
  • After dismantling the gearbox, check the condition of the synchronizers, gear teeth, selector forks and linkage.

Change the gearbox oil

Automatic gearbox oil changes are generally recommended every 60,000 kilometers. For manual gearboxes, oil changes are less frequent, recommended only after 250,000 kilometers.

Nevertheless, if your Alfa 159 gearbox breaks down, it's a good idea to change the gearbox oil: over time, the oil gradually loses its qualities and becomes loaded with metal residues from gear use, which can compromise its lubricating role
