Citroën C4 Aircross : Gearbox troubleshooting

While the Citroën C4 Aircross was sold from 2012 to 2017, its story actually began two years earlier with Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors. Its compact crossover, the ASX I, was initially presented at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2010.

Marketing of this compact crossover stopped in 2017, following a more than mixed success: even if the technical know-how and reliability were there, it was difficult for Citroën to operate a vehicle that had not been completely produced by the brand. The C4 Aircross was replaced by the C5 Aircross, which has been on the road since 2018.

Regardless of the type of engine and transmission your car is equipped with, one of the most important components is its gearbox. This robust component is not immune to defects or premature wear. How do you look after the gearbox on your Citroën C4 Aircross? EDEN BOITES explains it all!

What you need to know about the Citroën C4 Aircross

Like the ASX I model from which it is derived, the C4 Aircross offers two types of transmission: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. With front-wheel drive, engine power is transmitted only to the vehicle's front wheels. With all-wheel drive, all four wheels are driven.

All-wheel drive is available with all C4 Aircross engines except the 1.6 117 petrol engine and its five-speed manual gearbox.

All other petrol and diesel engines offer all-wheel drive. This is the case, for example, with the 2.0L 148 hp petrol engine, equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox for front-wheel drive, or an automatic gearbox for all-wheel drive.

On the diesel side, transmission type and engine power have no impact on the transmission system, which remains manual and six-speed, like the Citroën C4 Aircross 1.6 HDi 4×4 gearbox.

Depending on the engine selected, the vehicle's top speed is between 180 km/h and 200 km/h.

The right reflexes for extended service life

There are a number of things you can do on a daily basis to prolong the life of your gearbox. In the case of a manual gearbox, systematically shift into neutral in traffic jams and at stops, rather than keeping your foot on the clutch. It's also a good idea to anticipate by downshifting gears one at a time, rather than skipping them.

If your C4 Aircross is equipped with an automatic gearbox, driving habits are simpler. The golden rule is never to attempt to shift into Park (P) or Reverse (R) while the vehicle is still moving.

Automatic gearboxes require more regular maintenance than their manual counterparts, so it's a good idea to change the gearbox oil. The frequency depends on the use of your car, but as a rough guide, you should expect to visit your garage every 60,000 kilometers.

How to diagnose a breakdown?

If, unfortunately, your precautions while driving have not been sufficient and you suspect that the gearbox is the cause of your vehicle's breakdown, you can check a few critical points quite simply.

If you feel resistance when shifting gears, a gearbox oil defect is a likely cause. Also known as transmission oil, it should not be confused with engine oil! Its role is to ensure proper lubrication of the entire transmission system: clutch, pinions, differential, gears and crankshaft. If the oil contains impurities (or is black in color), lubrication is probably insufficient, and a gearbox oil change may be all that's needed to solve the problem.

The sprockets can also be inspected: if they are visually damaged, they must be replaced, or risk causing serious damage to your Citroën C4 Aircross.

Although it's possible to change the transmission oil yourself with the right equipment, changing a sprocket is too complex an operation, and the intervention of a professional mechanic is strongly recommended.
