Its transmission system transfers the torque and power generated by the engine. It must distribute and adjust this energy between the wheels, taking into account vehicle speed, acceleration and deceleration. If you notice gear shifting difficulties, jerking or unusual noises, you need to take immediate action.

If you notice these signs while driving your van, don't worry! EDEN BOITES guides you through the process of restoring your transmission to its original quality. Follow our advice to find out how to repair your Peugeot Boxer gearbox

The evolution of the Peugeot Boxer gearbox

The various Peugeot Boxer gearboxes adapt to technological developments and market needs over time. Their references take into accountproduction year, engine and fuel type

From 1994 to 2002, the first model, a cousin of the Citroën Jumper and Fiat Ducato, replaced the Peugeot J5. At the time, a 5-speed manual gearbox was fitted to the 1905 cm3 petrol and 2.5, 2.8 and 3.0 l diesel versions.

In 2006, the van received a facelift, with a particular focus on ergonomics and functionality. Diesel engines were upgraded to include a 2.2 HDI 100 BVM5, a 2.2 HDI 120 BVM6 and a more powerful 3.0 HDI 160 BVM6, all with 16 valves and common-rail turbocharging.

2014 sees the launch of the third generation. The engine range is based on the 2.2 BlueHDi 110/130/150/160 and the 3.0 HDi 180.

Two years later, the Euro 6 standard requires the use ofAdblue. The new versions are then equipped with a 2.0 Blue HDI 110/130/160 hp, followed in 2019 by a 2.2 BlueHDi 120/140/165 hp engine. They offer a choice between a 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox and a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Today, the partner brands have formed the Stellantis Group, and are developing the same 2.2 turbo diesel engine or its electric version.

Identifying the first symptoms of a Peugeot Boxer gearbox failure

With regular maintenance, your Peugeot Boxer 2.2 HDI gearbox should last the life of your vehicle. Despite this, a shock, a leak or neglect can quickly turn minor faults into problems requiring costly repairs. Please observe the following points:

Check oil level

When your gearbox feels hard, it's not necessarily a sign of breakage. All its gears must be immersed in oil, which is continually stirred by internal movements. If the oil level decreases, gear shifting becomes less fluid. Once the oil has been drained, if the problem persists, check the state of the crankcase. If there are any cracks, stains on the floor will indicate the extent of the leak.

Check clutch

The travel of yourclutch pedalis a good indicator. However, poor lubrication of the system is often the cause of common breakdowns. As a preventive measure, you should check the clutch fluid level, and assess whether draining the reservoir is necessary.

Identifying signs

If your Peugeot Boxer gearbox makes abnormal noise or has difficulty shifting gears, the problem may be due to age. The mechanism is subject to wear on parts such as gears, synchronizer rings and pinion teeth.

If your gears jump, it's often a linkage or synchro failure.

These operations are delicate and require the expertise of a professional.

Repairing the gearbox on a Peugeot Boxer

In all cases, if the signs of failure persist, make an appointment to see a professional: a car center, a dealer, a local garage, or any service provider able to guarantee its service.

Be sure to write down as many details as possible about the symptoms you notice:

  • Specify whether these signs appear at specific times (for example, when accelerating or downshifting);
  • Indicate whether you have recently had a shock or driven on uneven ground;
  • Estimate when this malfunction began.

All the details will be useful to the mechanic in making his diagnosis. He will test the gearbox reactions and examine the mechanism to assess the state of wear of the various components.

If no problem is detected in the first stages, the repairer may decide that removal is necessary. This delicate operation requires a thorough understanding of the structure of your gearbox. The sequence for removing fasteners and components depends closely on the specific product reference.

Changing the gearbox on a Peugeot Boxer

When the damage is too extensive, the repairer generally recommends replacing the broken gearbox. In this case, you have two choices:
