Gearbox broken? We help you identify and order your model
Replacing a gearbox is one of the most costly operations on a vehicle: EDEN BOITES gives you some tips on how to maintain and repair it.

How do you deal with gearbox failure?
Understanding the constitution of a transmission
The transmission system extends from the gearshift to the wheels. The gearbox consists of the following components:
- The sliding gear locks the gear ratio by attaching one of the idler gears to the shaft it occupies;
- The selector forks move the shifter to engage the gear by locking one of the pinions on the secondary shaft;
- Synchronizers enable smooth gear locking;
- Theinput shaft, connected to the crankshaft via the clutch, rotates at the same speed as the engine;
- Thesecondary shaft contains the pinions for each gear;
- Theintermediate shaft links the primary and secondary shafts;
- The differential distributes speeds to the left and right wheels;
- Bearings are used to rotate drive shafts.
Parts external to the gearbox include the linkage, universal joints, clutch and flywheel.
Know the specifics of the Mercedes E-Class gearbox
Depending on the version, transmission is either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Whatever the type of engine chosen - petrol, diesel or hybrid - the gearbox can be manual or automatic. On the first two generations, it features four or five gears on the W124 phase 3 and the W210.
Both the 200 D EXECUTIVE 9G-TRONIC and the 200 FASCINATION 4MATIC 9G-TRONIC feature a 9-speed G-Tronic automatic gearbox with hydraulic torque converter and electronic control.
The mechanical gearbox is available with up to six speeds, and offers 180 hp on the 200 FASCINATION.

Managing gearbox oil leaks
If you notice a gearbox oil leak under your car, don't panic! There are several solutions to this problem. It may be as simple as replacing faulty SPI seals or a cracked crankcase, tightening the drain plug, using sealants to make the rubbers supple again,adjusting the oil quantity if the level is too high, and so on.
