Reliability and repair of the BMW 320 gearbox

The BMW 3 Series, icon of the family sedan, has changed little in its recipe for success since its launch: four doors, rear-wheel drive and a wide range of engines. The numbering of the cars identifies the series with the first number - here 3, and the displacement for the last two - here 2 liters. Fuel-injected petrol models bear the letter i, and diesel engines the letter d.
In December 2022, the 320 model was redesigned, with the interior featuring the "Curved Display", a double curved screen. This model is now only available with a 190 hp, 4-cylinder 2.0 L turbo-diesel automatic.

Other models offer an automatic gearbox, such as the BMW 320 2.0 cdi 4×4. Note: BMW's automatic gearbox is notably more fuel-efficient than the manual.

How reliable is the gearbox on my BMW 320?

The gearbox is an essential driving mechanism, coordinating engine speed with that of the wheels, and is built to last. However, the first signs of weakness should not be taken lightly.
How can you tell if the gearbox in your BMW 320 is starting to wear out, and how can it be repaired? We tell you all about it.

BMW 320: how do I maintain my gearbox?

To avoid any problems with your gearbox, it's a good idea to change the gearbox oil regularly, preferably every year. Regular maintenance ensures that your gearbox is properly lubricated. We also generally recommend an overhaul every 30,000 kilometers, or every 2 years, with a clutch kit change every 100,000 kilometers.

Such times are essentially indicative, and will vary according to the use you make of your car and its model. For a precise estimate that's right for your car, talk to a professional

When should I repair the gearbox on my BMW 320?

Thanks to easily identifiable signals, you can quickly spot a problem with the gearbox of your BMW 320. In particular, look out for any cracking noise when shifting gears, or if a gear locks up during shifting. Problems of this kind can be traced back to 3 main factors, to which particular attention should be paid:

  • The gearbox, if not sufficiently lubricated ;
  • If the clutch does not respond normally ;
  • Sprockets, if they show signs of wear.

Following removal of a manual gearbox, which is carried out in several stages and preferably with the help of a third party, you should observe the following:

  • The condition of the driveshaft gears and the proper lubrication of the assembly:
  • The state of wear of the synchronizer ring, whose teeth should be clearly visible: use a feeler gauge to check them. In addition, the ring should show no signs of deformation;
  • Bearings and pinions, which can sometimes be corroded ;
  • You'll need to replace worn SPI seals. Before fitting a new one, remember to coat it with engine oil.

After such a check-up, you should be able to determine whether the gearbox on your BMW 320 needs changing or not. Before embarking on the complex task of removing the gearbox, turn to a professional if you have any doubts. He'll be able to guarantee the quality of your gearbox without risking damage to the car's mechanisms during removal.
