From 1964 to today: the different generations of Ford Mustang
From the outset, Ford decided to equip its Ford Mustang with high-performance engines. The engine range now includes 2.8-liter in-line six-cylinder with power limited to 101 hp, as well as a 4.7-liter V8 engine with 271 horsepower.
Over the years, the Ford Mustang has undergone various evolutions. The American manufacturer took advantage of technical innovations to equip it with increasingly powerful engines, such as the 7.0-liter V8 engine found on the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, which develops up to 375 hp..
Launched in 1979, the Ford Mustang III marks a turning point, as it now features smaller engines: the Ford Mustang V8 5.0 sees its power reduced to 140 hp. Limited in size, these engines gradually gained in efficiency, with the power of the Ford Mustang IV 4.6-liter V8 reaching 390 hp in the early 2000s.
The Ford Mustang V continues this trend with a maximum output of 550 horsepower. This power is further reduced to 450 hp on the Ford Mustang VI.
Finally, the Ford Mustang VII, on the road since 2023 features 2 different engines, the 4-cylinder 2.3 EcoBoost and V8 Coyote 5.0engines, rated at 317 and 480 hp respectively.
Ford Mustang: gearboxes at the service of powertrains
The Ford Mustang gearboxes have inevitably evolved with its engine. The first generation is equipped with 3- or 4-speed manual gearboxesmanual transmissions, but also 3-speed automatic transmissions. These remain virtually unchanged on the Ford Mustang II. The third generationon the other hand, sees a few changes with the introduction of the 5-speed T5 manual gearbox and the 4-speed AOD automatic gearbox.
To meet the growing need for ever more powerful engines, the American manufacturer has equipped its Ford Mustang V with with Tremec TR-6060 6-speed manual gearboxes and automatic 5-speed 5R55S automatic transmissions.
Current Ford Mustangs benefit from Getrag Getrag MT82 and Tremec TR-3160 technologies for manual gearboxes. These are also available with the optional 6-speed 6R80 automatic gearbox or 10R80 10-speed automatic gearbox. You'll find this famous automatic gearbox on the Ford Mustang VI (2) FASTBACK 5.0 V8 450 GT BVA 10 launched in 2024.
