Hyundai Santa Fe : Gearbox diagnosis and repaira

The Santa Fe, South Korean manufacturer Hyundai's Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), has gone through four generations since 2000. An all-new version with futuristic styling and angular lines, the Santa Fe V, was presented in the summer of 2023, and is increasingly focused on family needs.

What are the special features of the Hyundai Santa Fe gearbox?

Vehicle specifications

With the exception of its third generation, which offers all-wheel drive only, the Hyundai Santa Fe also offers the choice of front-wheel drive. In the first case, all the vehicle's wheels are driven. In the second case, engine power is transmitted only to the front wheels.

This is reflected in the gearbox. The first generations allow you to opt for a five- or six-speed manual gearbox. This is the case for the Santa Fe II 2.2 Crdi 150 4wd Pack Executive and the III 2.2 Crdi 200 Initia respectively.

From the fourth generation onwards, only the six-speed automatic gearbox is fitted as standard, with no option for a mechanical version.

The transfer case

A car equipped with an all-wheel drive system requires a transfer case. Like a differential, this will transmit the engine's power to the vehicle's other two wheels. In the case of the Hyundai Santa Fe, these will be the rear wheels, since it's the front wheels that are usually driven.

In other words, it's this element that allows your car to be classified as 4X4. All-wheel drive can sometimes be activated manually, or electronically like automatic gearboxes. This is particularly true of the Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CDi transfer case.

The most common types of breakdown

Changing the transmission oil

Whether linked to the gearbox or the transfer case, the most frequent source of failure is transmission oil. Often confused with the version reserved for the engine, gearbox oil is different, but no less essential.

This special oil ensures proper lubrication of the entire transmission system. Over time, it becomes contaminated and can no longer fulfill its role. A regular oil change is therefore recommended: plan a visit to the garage every 250,000 kilometers for a manual gearbox, and every 60,000 kilometers for an automatic version.

Other common problems

An anomaly felt while driving can often point to the source of the problem. Here are a few tips to help you identify it:

  • Excessive rubbing noises indicate wear on the bearings at the end of the drive shafts;
  • Difficulty shifting gears is probably due to a fault in the linkage;
  • A resisting clutch pedal and vibrations when the vehicle is in neutral indicate advanced degradation of the clutch system.

Describing the sensations you feel when you drive your Hyundai Santa Fe can help your mechanic to make an accurate diagnosis, thus saving time. He or she will then be able to determine whether your transmission system can be repaired, or whether it needs to be completely replaced.
