The story of the Range Rover begins in 1970. At the time, British carmaker British Leyland was in urgent need of a brand relaunch, so it came up with the idea of a new kind of 4×4, as luxurious as it was adventurous.

Gearbox broken? We help you identify and order your model
Four generations have succeeded one another over the past fifty years, each with its own trademark since they all come from different manufacturers.
The gearbox is designed to last the life of the vehicle. Nevertheless, the driver is not immune to unforeseen breakdowns: EDEN BOITES has some tips on how to repair your Range Rover 's gearbox when it fails.
How does the Range Rover gearbox work?
Range Rover transmission features
Like any self-respecting off-road vehicle, the Range Rover is equipped with all-wheel drive: four-wheel drive offers greater control and better grip on difficult roads.
Whether powered by a petrol or diesel engine, the Range Rover is available with an automatic or manual gearbox up to the second generation: this is the case with the Vogue V8 or the DSE Pack. From the third generation onwards, the automatic gearbox becomes the only option: it is available with six speeds, as on the TDV8 270 DPF Autobiography, or with eight speeds on the 3.0 D350 Vogue SWB, for example.

Mechanical or automatic gearbox?
The difference between these two types of gearbox lies in comfort and price.
When the vehicle is fitted with a manual gearbox, the driver controls the gear change by operating the clutch pedal and gearshift. The risk of damage is greater than with an automatic gearbox, if the driver does not correctly assess the moment of gear change, or makes sudden movements on the various mechanisms.
Automatic gearboxes are more expensive to buy and repair. It offers the advantage of real driving comfort, as the driver no longer has to worry about changing gears. All-wheel drive often makes it more difficult to handle the gearbox: this partly explains why the Range Rover is fitted almost exclusively with an automatic gearbox.
How to maintain your Range Rover gearbox?
The Range Rover gearbox is a robust mechanism, but requires a few precautions to extend its life. First of all, it's important to be aware of your surroundings to anticipate the behavior of other motorists or pedestrians, and avoid sudden acceleration or braking.
Regular checking of gearbox oil level and quality helps prevent premature wear of gears, pinions and synchronizers. An oil change is recommended every 60,000 kilometers for the automatic gearbox, and from 250,000 kilometers for the mechanical version.
What does Range Rover gearbox repair involve?
Identifying the signs of gearbox failure
A breakdown of the Range Rover gearbox may be manifested by the following signs:
- Resistance to shifting accompanied by cracking noises indicates wear on the synchronizer rings;
- Continuous whirring indicates damage to one or more of the bearings used to guide the drive shafts at their ends;
- When it is no longer possible to shift gears, the cause may be a blockage in the selection system, a linkage problem or a lack of transmission oil.
Call in an expert
If any of these symptoms appear, or if you have the slightest doubt about your Land Rover Range Rover gearbox, don't delay in contacting a mechanic for a precise diagnosis of the problem.
It's not always necessary to replace your entire transmission system: your mechanic may recommend a gearbox oil change, or the replacement of individual parts such as the clutch, seals, bearings or synchronizers.
