On a truck, as on a car, the gearbox transmits engine power to the wheels. A fundamental element of the transmission system, the gearbox enables the vehicle to adapt its speed according to driving conditions, thanks to the gear ratio system.

Unfortunately, some parts of the Volkswagen LT gearbox can become damaged. Here's an overview of maintenance and repair options for the Volkswagen LT truck gearbox!

What are the special features of the Volkswagen LT gearbox?

The gearbox on a Volkswagen LT truck is mostly a 5-speed manual, such as the Volkswagen LT 35 2.5 TDI. This is the dominant model for Volkswagen LT trucks in France and throughout Europe.

The Volkswagen LT truck is also available with an automatic gearbox, particularly in the vans and MPV versions. The Volkswagen LT 2.5 TDI 174 Confort Tiptronic features a Tiptronic gear box: invented by Porsche, this is an automatic gearbox which nevertheless allows the driver to select a manual mode where he can shift gears himself.

Whether it's a commercial truck or a van, your vehicle may be experiencing gearbox problems . You need to check that it's working properly to avoid bigger problems and higher repair costs.

When should the Volkswagen LT gearbox be repaired?

Various signals indicate that a gearbox is damaged and needs to be checked or repaired.

If, when accelerating or braking, you hear the sound of scrap metal clanging together, it could be a bearing or differential problem.

Be on the lookout for leaks. Walk around your stationary vehicle: if you see oil stains on the ground, your gearbox may be leaking oil.

Finally, keep an eye on gear changes while driving. Sudden gear changes, loss of power, a hard clutch or skipping gears are all signs of malfunction that should alert you. It's time to check your Volkswagen LT's gearbox.

How do I maintain and repair my gearbox?

The first step in repairing a gearbox is to identify the problem and make the right diagnosis. If in doubt, don't hesitate to call in a professional to help you.

The problem may come from the bearings, the clutch pedal, the transmission ratios... Review each component that makes up your gearbox.

Then change the transmission oil in the gearbox.

To do this, place a drain pan under the drain plug, then loosen it. Then let the oil drain out. Finally, add new transmission oil. Consult your service booklet for the quantity and type of oil required.

The problem may be related to the clutch pedal, in which case adjustments or replacement may be necessary.

If it's the gears and transmission ratios in your gearbox that are damaged, you can add axle gear and transmission oil. Its role is to lubricate precise gears to reduce wear.

When repair is not possible... a gearbox change is a must!

Did your garage tell you that your gearbox is beyond repair ? Don 't panic: you can replace it completely, economically, ecologically and above all, reliably.

You don't have to buy a new Volkswagen LT gearbox directly from a garage: you can buy it yourself, new or reconditioned, by identifying the right model for your vehicle. This way, you don't have to go to a garage for the purchase: the garage can install the part you supply, and you only pay for the labor.
