The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is available in four generations, each with its own specific features and names: type 168 in 1997, type 169 in 2004, type 176 in 2012 and type 177 in 2018. The third generation marks a major turning point: the Mercedes A-Class is identified as a premium compact sedan, whereas earlier models were closer to a mini MPV.

Gearbox broken? We help you identify and order your model
The German carmaker launched its fourth generation in 2018 and can boast sales of 11,300 units, compared with 8,000 units sold by its direct rivals, the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 in France over 2022.
Its gearbox, normally designed to last the life of the vehicle, can be subject to a breakdown thatEDEN BOITES suggests you solve with a few tricks.
How does the transmission work in the Mercedes A-Class?
Right from the start, the Mercedes A-Class is equipped with a gasoline or diesel engine: gasoline-electric hybridization doesn't appear until the fourth generation.
Most models use front-wheel drive, with the exception of the AMG sports versions, which are equipped with all-wheel drive for greater grip and traction.
The automatic gearbox is initially available with five speeds, as on the 140 CLASSIC or 140 ELEGANCE, and reaches eight speeds on models such as the 35 AMG 4MATIC 8G SPEEDSHIFT DCT.
The manual gearbox is available with five or six gears, for a maximum output of 136 hp. The sports version, the 45 AMG S 4MATIC+ 8G-DCT, only available with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, delivers 421 hp.
How to avoid gearbox failure?
Some parts, such as synchronizer rings and bearings, wear out over time: this normal process is the result of regular use of the vehicle. However, if the driver adopts an aggressive driving style, the wear and tear of these components can appear prematurely and lead to chain malfunctions: wear of gear teeth, deformation of selector forks, damage to drive shafts, etc.
Gearbox maintenance involves regularly checking the transmission oil level and topping up if necessary. In fact, if the oil runs low, the parts are less lubricated and rub against each other, causing deterioration and overheating of the transmission.
Gearbox oil changes are recommended every 60,000 kilometers for automatic gearboxes and from 250,000 kilometers for manual gearboxes. Be sure to follow these recommendations: over time, the oil becomes loaded with particles from the transmission mechanisms, which can impair its lubricating role.
Finally, it's best to shift into neutral when the vehicle is stationary, to preserve the clutch disc and release bearing.
What does Mercedes A-Class gearbox repair involve?
If you notice unusual noises, resistance to shifting gears, a sensation of skipping gears or a drop in vehicle performance, don't delay in contacting your mechanic. Based on your observations and an analysis of the parts in your Mercedes A-Class gear box, the mechanic will be able to make a precise diagnosis of the fault and identify the necessary repairs, which may include the following:
- Clutch repair, including replacement of the clutch disc, clutch release mechanism or flywheel;
- Replacing synchronizers or bearings;
- Changing the gearbox oil ;
- Replace seals if oil leakage is detected;
- Adjustment of control cables or differential.
In some cases, the damage to the gearbox is too extensive and requires complete replacement.
Where can I buy my new gearbox for less?
When drawing up your quotation, your mechanic is likely to offer you a factory-fitted gearbox, which can be very expensive. However, it is possible to order one yourself and have it installed by the mechanic.
