Problems with Renault Laguna gearboxes

The Renault Laguna offers various types of gearbox, depending on model and year of manufacture. The different types of gearbox available for the Laguna fall into two categories: manual gearboxes and automatic gearboxes.

Manual gearboxes, such as the Renault Laguna 1.8 petrol gearbox, are commonly used and include 5- and 6-speed models. For automatic versions, Renault offers 4, 5 or even 6-speed gearboxes. However, automatics also come in a number of variants, such as robotized gearboxes and continuously variable transmissions.

Despite their differences in method of use and operation, the construction of these two types of gearbox remains essentially the same: a primary shaft, an aligned secondary shaft and finally an intermediate shaft placed parallel to the other two.

How to detect gearbox wear?

Signs of wear may vary depending on the type of box. However, certain symptoms are common to all. Here are the main signs of wear to look out for:

  • Difficulty shifting gears: this may indicate a problem with the shifting mechanism or gear wear;
  • Fluid leaks: the presence of transmission fluid leaks under the vehicle indicates a major problem. Transmission fluid is crucial for lubricating and cooling the gearbox, and any loss can rapidly damage your gearbox;
  • Unusual noise: rattling, grinding or hissing noises from the gearbox during operation may indicate internal component wear, lack of lubrication or debris in the mechanism;
  • Vibrations: unusual vibrations during gear changes or when driving at a constant speed may indicate a problem with the alignment or wear of transmission components;
  • Burning smell: a burning smell from the gearbox is often a sign of overheated transmission fluid, which can cause premature wear of internal components.

How to repair a Renault Laguna gearbox?

If you notice any of these signs, have your vehicle inspected by a qualified professional. However, if you have the necessary skills and the right tools, you can do some repairs yourself.

Here is the procedure to follow for repairs to your Renault Laguna gearbox:

  • Step 1: Establish a precise diagnosis of the problem ;
  • Step 2: gain access to the gearbox by using stanchions or an elevator to raise the vehicle;
  • Step 3: Secure and drain gearbox oil ;
  • Step 4: Remove the protective housing and exhaust system components ;
  • Step 5: Identify and repair or replace defective parts such as gears, SPI seals, bearings, etc. ;
  • Step 6: After reassembling the parts, fill the gearbox with new, suitable oil.
