Gearbox broken? We help you identify and order your model

The gearbox is an essential vehicle component, transmitting power from the engine to the wheels. Whether manual or automatic, you need to be able to quickly identify the signs of a malfunction and adopt the right reflexes in the event of a breakdown.

Gearbox operation

Technical specifications of the Renault Maxity

Whichever model you choose, a five-speed manual gearbox such as the Renault Maxity 2.5 dci is available: this four-cylinder diesel engine is available with 110 or 130 hp. This more powerful version can then be fitted with a six-speed gearbox, like the Maxity CCb 130 35 / 5 L2 Avantage.

The automatic gearbox is available a few years after the vehicle goes on sale. It is fitted on the Maxity 150.35/BVR6 CHASSIS CABINE L3 ABS + EHS from 2011.

Like most utility vehicles, the transmission is rear-wheel drive. Speed is transmitted to the rear-wheel drive.

How do I use my gearbox properly?

A manual gearbox can be damaged more quickly than an automatic if it is not shifted properly by the driver. Here are a few tips to help you keep your manual gearbox as long as possible:

  • Depress the clutch pedal firmly when shifting gears and take your foot off the gas pedal during the transition;
  • Handle the gearshift with care when engaging a gear;
  • Use neutral when waiting for a traffic light or in traffic jams;
  • Pay close attention to the engine noise and the number of revolutions per minute, so that you can shift into the right gear at the right time.

The risk of damaging an automatic gearbox is less frequent, but there is one important principle to remember: never engage P (Park) mode or reverse gear before the vehicle has come to a complete stop, otherwise the gearbox components may be seriously damaged.

My box is faulty: how do I repair it?

Causes of failure

Gearbox malfunctions may manifest themselves in one or more of the following ways:

  • Difficult shifting or cracking noises may indicate an insufficient oil level;
  • When the engine's acceleration is not synchronized with that of the car, the number of revolutions per minute increases without the car moving forward any faster. Clutch replacement is then necessary;
  • Theinability to shift certain gears may be caused by wear on the cables and linkages involved in gear selection.

Transmission oil

Regular checking of the oil level is essential, as it lubricates the various gearbox components. If the dipstick is too low, it may indicate leakage due to deterioration of the seals.

Periodic gearbox oil changes should be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations: depending on the model and its engine, the type of oil and its change frequency will not be the same.

Here's how to change the oil yourself:

  • Gather the necessary tools: a wrench, a drip tray for used oil, a jack, candles, protective gloves, a new drain plug, a funnel and an oil dipstick;
  • Roll for about fifteen minutes to heat the oil and facilitate its flow;
  • Raise the car to access the drain plug located under the gearbox;
  • Unscrew the plug to allow the oil to drain into the pan;
  • Open the filler cap, usually located on the side of the gearbox;
  • Slowly pour in the oil to the recommended level using the funnel, after carefully checking the type and quantity of oil recommended by Renault for the model concerned;
  • Check the oil level after a short period of driving.
