Repair and maintenance of BMW 316 gearboxes

Introduced in 1975, the BMW 3 Series was the brand's smallest model until the introduction of the 1 Series in 2004. The BMW 316 boasts 102 hp for the Compact Series. Despite its rear-wheel drive, it offers excellent roadholding for safe, comfortable driving.

But how do you know if the gearbox on your BMW 316 is damaged, and how do you go about repairing it? EDEN BOITES explains.

What are the special features of BMW 316 gearboxes?

The BMW 316 is usually fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox, as is the case with the BMW 316 2.0 cdi.

Other models offer an automatic gearbox, such as the BMW 320 2.0 cdi 4×4 . BMW's automatic gearbox consumes considerably less fuel than the manual.

BMW 316: How do I maintain my gearbox?

To prevent any problems with your gearbox, we strongly recommend that you change the gearbox oil every year. Regular maintenance guarantees a well-lubricated gearbox: a service is recommended every 30,000 kilometers, or at least every 2 years. As for the clutch kit, it's best to change it every 100,000 kilometers.

These times are given as a guide, and vary according to the type of vehicle and the use you make of it: don't hesitate to contact a professional for a more precise estimate.

When should I repair the gearbox on my BMW 316?

There are a number of signs that can help you spot a problem with the gearbox on your BMW 316 quickly, especially when driving, such as a creaking sound when shifting gears or a gear locking up when shifting.There are three main hypotheses to explain these problems:

  • an inadequately lubricated gearbox;
  • a faulty clutch member ;
  • worn sprockets.

How do I repair the gearbox on my BMW 316?

The first step is to remove the gearbox. This is a multi-stage process, best carried out with the help of a third party.

In the case of a manual gearbox, you should note the following points in particular:

  • Drive shafts: check gears and overall lubrication;
  • The synchronizer ring: check that the houses (the ring's "teeth") are still well formed, and check for wear with a feeler gauge. Finally, make sure the ring still has its original shape;
  • SPI seals: these seals ensure the sealing and movement of the assembly. They should be replaced at the first sign of wear. Before fitting a new SPI seal, coat it with engine oil;
  • Bearings: check bearings and sprockets for corrosion.

This initial check should enable you to assess whether or not the gearbox on your BMW 316 needs changing. However, gearbox removal is a complex operation, so don't hesitate to call in a professional who can guarantee the quality of your gearbox and the preservation of the car's mechanisms during removal.

Repair or replace the entire gearbox?

Only a professional can correctly diagnose whether or not your gearbox needs changing. There's no need to buy your gearbox directly from a garage: you can buy it independently, and often more cheaply, with a warranty period!
