Reflex n°1: identify your Gearbox Alfa Romeo

The history of the legendary brand began in 1910, when it was founded as Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, ALFA. A Neapolitan by the name of Nicola Romeo bought the company 8 years later and changed the name to Alfa Romeo. Since then, the beautiful Italian cars have been a real success story, thrilling lovers of both chic and powerful cars.

Even if the first models achieved a great deal compared to their time, many refreshments were necessary to ensure that Alfa Romeo would not be left behind by the competition. We're not just talking about cosmetic facelifts, but real mechanical transformations that involve an evolution of the transmission systems.

The famous Giulietta arrived on the market in 1954 and immediately won over the public with its daring looks. Under the bonnet of the Giulietta Sprint was a modest 1.3 litre engine that was also present in the 81 bhp Giulietta Spider. A 4-door edition was released in 1955, offering 54 bhp to its drivers. The Gearbox Alfa Romeo Giulietta engine of this first generation was a BVM4.

Production of the Giulietta ended in 1964, to be replaced by a new generation that was more refined and sportier. However, it returned with a vengeance in 2010 after undergoing numerous modifications. The range of engines was extended and the types of gearboxes were diversified at the same rate. The BVM6 is the new reference. It can be found, for example, on the 1.4 TB 150 hp and 1.75 TBi 235 hp petrol units, as well as on the 1.4 LPG Turbo 120 hp LNG unit and the 2.0 JTDM 140 hp diesel unit. The 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (TCT) option is available for the 2.0 JTDM 170 hp engine.

For its 2016 version, the timeless Giulietta gets a new 1.6 JTDM diesel engine. The 6-speed manual gearbox is still standard. The TCT gearbox is available for the 1.4 litre TB MultiAir 170 HP, 1.6 litre JTDM 120 HP and 2.0 JTDM 175 HP.

The first Giulia appeared in 1962. It was one of the successors to the Giulietta. Launched as the Giulia Berlina and produced until 1978, it was powered by a 92 bhp 1.6L engine with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

The Giulia Coupé 1300 GTA Junior left the factory in 1965 before disappearing in 1972. It was powered by a 96 bhp 1.3L block, combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

After decades of silence, the Giulia has risen from the ashes in 2016. As you can probably guess, the Gearbox Alfa Romeo Giulia has evolved considerably to meet the demands of thrill-seeking drivers. The manufacturer has chosen 2.0-litre petrol engines with power ratings of 200 bhp and 280 bhp. A 4WD version is available. The 8-speed automatic gearbox becomes the reference. As for the 2.2 litre diesel units, the Giulia is available with both BVM6 and BVA6. Power ratings range from 136 hp to 180 hp.

You may be experiencing a problem with a Gearbox Alfa Romeo 159? This iconic model produced from 2005 to 2011 operates with different transmission systems that vary depending on the engine. The BVM5 is coupled with the 1.8L 16V 140 bhp petrol unit. The BVM6 is paired with the 1.8L TBI 200hp, 1.9L JTS 160hp, 2.2L JTS 185hp and 3.2L JTS Q4 260hp. The 6-speed manual gearbox is also available as standard on the 1.9L JTDM 120hp, 1.9L JTDM 16V 150hp, 2.4L JTDM 200hp and 210hp diesel engines. Optionally, the 2.2L JTS 185 HP, 2.4L JTDM 200 HP and 210 HP units can be equipped with an Alfa Romeo 159 6-speed automaticGearbox

The Gearbox Alfa Romeo 147 has also undergone various optimisations over the generations. The year 2000 saw the birth of two versions of the compact saloon. One with 3 doors and one with 5 doors. However, the mechanical characteristics are more or less the same. As standard, the 147 comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox, with the exception of the Gearbox Alfa Romeo 147 jtd 1.9L 16V 140 bhp which is a BVM6. A single-clutch robotised gearbox (Selespeed) is available as an option on certain engines.

For 2005, the 147 gets a facelift that gives it more power. The BVM5 comes as standard with the 1.6 Eco TS 105 HP, 1.6 TS 120 HP and 2.0 TS 150 HP engines. TheAlfa Romeo 147 jtd Gearbox 5-speed manual is available on the 1.9L 100hp, 115hp and 120hp blocks. However, the 1.9L JTD 16V 150hp and 1.9L JTD 170hp units are powered by a BVM6. As an option, the automated Easyspeed gearbox replaces the Selespeed.

The MiTo seduces with its unmistakable look and the promises of performance announced by its manufacturer. In fact, if you've driven one of the different generations, you've probably noticed the clever mix of safety, handling and comfort, in addition to the mechanical prowess. The first version comes with 7 petrol power units. The Gearbox Alfa Romeo Mito 1.4 petrol 155 bhp is the same BVM6 that equips the 1.4L MultiAir 135 bhp block. In the same generation, the Alfa Romeo Mito 1.4 MPI 78 HP petrol gear box is a BVM5 which is also standard on the 1.4L MultiAir 135 HP (BVA6 optional). In the diesel range, the 1.3L JTDM unit available in three power levels (85, 90 and 95 bhp) has a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Gearbox Alfa Romeo Mito 1.6 jtdm 120 bhp is a 6-speed manual.

On the most recent models, the Gearbox Alfa Romeo Mito can also be a BVM5 (1.4L 78 bhp and 1.3L 90-95 bhp, for example), a BVM6 (0.9L 105 bhp engine) or a BVA6 TCT (Gearbox Alfa Romeo Mito 1.4L 140 bhp, for example).

We are far from having covered all the cars produced by Alfa Romeo in more than a century, but you already have an idea of the diversity of the gearboxes. So you can see why it is essential to identify the part number of the failed part to avoid a mistake if you have to replace components or the whole gearbox.

  • oil change Gearbox Alfa Romeo Mito oroil change Gearbox Alfa Romeo Giulietta if the lubricant is excessively dirty
  • bearing replacement Gearbox Alfa Romeo Mito in case of breakage
  • reconfiguration of the robotic system of a Gearbox Alfa Romeo gt 1.9 jtd in case of system malfunction
  • check of the fasteners to eliminate the cracking produced by a manualGearbox Alfa Romeo Mito
  • etc.

Make no mistake, the same operation may require a different approach depending on the vehicle concerned.
