Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1994, the Alfa Romeo GTV owes its bold, sporty lines to the famous Italian designer Enrico Fumia. Marketed the following year by Alfa Romeo, it was replaced by the Alfa Romeo Brera in 2005.

Gearbox broken? We help you identify and order your model
The gearbox is a key element in the smooth running of this car: EDEN BOITES can help you maintain and repair your Alfa Romeo GTV gearbox.
How do I know if my Alfa Romeo GTV gearbox is faulty?
Learn about the specific features of the Alfa GTV gearbox
The Alfa GTV is powered exclusively by gasoline engines with aluminum V4 and V6 displacements. Whichever model you choose, the transmission is always front-wheel drive.
The GTV 2.0 Twin Spark version was the most popular, with 23,822 units sold out of a total of 41,659 GTV models produced. Like all Alfa GTV engines, it is equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox, except for the GTV 3.0 V6 24v and GTV 3.2 V6 24v , which are available with a six-speed manual.
Identify the signs of failure and understand the causes
If you notice unusual noises such as creaking or hissing noises, resistance to shifting gears, a burning smell in the cabin or a general loss of power from your vehicle, don't delay in contacting an automotive professional to avoid further damage.
The causes of an Alfa Romeo GTV gearbox malfunction can be as follows:
- Normal wear and tear of components resulting from daily, intensive use of the vehicle;
- Lubrication failure due to lack of transmission oil or deterioration in its quality;
- The failure of one part can lead to the failure of another;
- Aggressive driving with abrupt gear changes or sudden acceleration;
- An overloaded vehicle putting pressure on the gearbox.
How do I dismantle my gearbox?
To dismantle a gearbox, it's advisable to have a sound knowledge of mechanics, otherwise you run the risk of seriously damaging it.
Before dismantling your Alfa GTV gearbox, make sure you have the right tools and that your vehicle is on level ground. Change the transmission oil and remove the battery, control cables and gearshift lever. You can then use a jack to lift the car and place candles for support. Once access to your gearbox is free, unscrew the mounting bolts and use a transmission jack to support the gearbox during the disassembly process: you can then gently lower it and remove it from its interior.
What should I do if my Alfa GTV gearbox stops working?
Check transmission oil and change if necessary
Transmission oil has three major roles in gearbox operation: this specialized lubricant reduces friction between parts, cools the transmission and provides the hydraulic pressure needed for gear changes. That's why it's so important to check the level and appearance of your gearbox oil.
First, locate and remove the filler cap, usually located on the side of the can. Remove the dipstick and wipe it dry with a clean cloth. You can now put the dipstick back into its container, take it out and check that the mark left by the oil is between the two marks on the dipstick. If this is not the case, obtain the gearbox oil recommended for your model and fill the reservoir to the required level.
If the level is abnormally low, check for any oil leaks under the car.
Over time, transmission oil can become loaded with impurities and metal particles from gearbox parts. Regular transmission oil changes are highly recommended to restore the oil's lubricating properties. Automatic gearboxes require an oil change every 60,000 kilometers, while manual gearboxes generally require an oil change after 250,000 kilometers.
Contact an automotive expert
If you have any doubts about the operation of your gearbox, don't delay in contacting a mechanic who will be able to identify the problem. Don't hesitate to share your observations and feelings over the last few weeks: the more detailed your information, the faster and more accurate your mechanic's diagnosis will be.
