In 1999, Opel launched the Zafira, the 1st 7-seat MPV. Over 2.7 million units were sold until 2019, when the German brand transformed it into a passenger version of a utility vehicle. The latest generation, called the Zafira Life, boasts a high degree of modularity, a large load capacity and easy access.

The different Opel Zafira gearboxes
The 1st generation is available in a 2.2 DTI diesel model, equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and a 2.0 DTI model, with a 5-speed manual or automatic gearbox. Gasoline models are all equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
A 4- or 5-speed automatic gearbox is available on 1.8 and 2.2 displacements. Finally, the gas-powered Zafira I features a 5-speed manual gearbox.
2nd generation vehicles, marketed between 2005 and 2015, have a 6-speed manual transmission. This is the case of the Opel Zafira 1.7 CDI gearbox. A 6-speed automatic gearbox is available on the 1.9 CDI model. A 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox is also available for gasoline and gas-powered models.
In 2011, the brand launched the 3rd generation of the Zafira, renamed Tourer. It features a 1.4 turbo petrol engine, with power ranging from 110 to 195 hp, or a 1.6 CDTI diesel engine with 120, 136 or 140 hp. It is equipped with a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. In 2016, a 170 hp 2.0 CDTI engine makes its appearance.
The Zafira Life 1.5 and 2.0 diesel models are equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 2.0 180 hp model can also be combined with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The electric version, Zafira-e-life, features a 1-speed automatic gearbox.
How to recognize a malfunction?
The different gearbox models are given for information only: in fact, whatever the model, if your gearbox develops a fault, you'll be alerted by a number of signals. The most common of these is difficulty shifting gears. Another frequent symptom is a soft clutch pedal.
Do you experience jerking when starting up? Does your clutch slip? These are other signs of a malfunction.
Pay attention to sounds too. Sounds of rubbing or scraping can indicate a problem with your gearbox. An oil stain underneath the gearbox should also alert you.
Causes of the problem and common solutions
We advise you to take these signals seriously. As soon as you notice any of them, call in a professional mechanic rather than trying to examine the gearbox yourself. After all, the gearbox is a complex part of your car!
Main failures of the Opel Zafira gearbox
A professional technician will make a precise diagnosis. Certain malfunctions are common, including :
- A faulty transmission: over the years, transmission components wear out and can become obsolete;
- A damaged clutch: the clutch can also wear out. Its lifespan depends on how much you drive. It is common for the clutch to show signs of fatigue after 160,000 km;
- Faulty transmission solenoids: these control the flow of gearbox oil. When they fail, gears can be difficult to shift;
- Transmission fluid leakage: this may be due to a damaged seal, for example. In this case, the mechanism is not sufficiently lubricated, causing creaking when shifting gears;
- Transmission fluid clogging: over time, dirt and contaminants impregnate the fluid. Once again, this problem causes gear shifting difficulties.
Possible repairs
The mechanic will suggest a suitable solution. This may involve changing components, rebuilding or replacing the transmission. In the event of a clutch problem, it is often necessary to change the kit, which consists of the mechanism, disc and release bearing. This can be a costly repair.
If there is a leak, it may be sufficient to replace the faulty seal, then refill the transmission fluid. In the event of clogging, one solution is essential: draining.
Bear in mind that, if the failure is more serious, replacing the defective parts or changing the oil won't be enough, and you may have to replace the gearbox entirely.
