Renault Kangoo gearbox: how to repair it?

When Renault introduced the Kangoo in 1997, the company itself never expected it to be such a success. However, with four million units sold worldwide, the Kangoo's silhouette was now familiar - so much so that a gathering of loyal Kangoo customers was organized in Japan! Renault has come up with a new vehicle model, revolutionizing the small van with a sliding side door. This model is aimed at both professional and private customers, and offers seating for five.

But how can you tell if the gearbox in your Renault Kangoo is damaged, and how can you repair it? EDEN BOITES explains.

What are the specific features of Renault Kangoo gearboxes?

The Renault Kangoo is a front-wheel-drive vehicle fitted with a 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox, depending on the model: this is the case with the Renault Kangoo 1.5 DCI gearbox.

The latest generation Renault Kangoo offers a 7-speed automatic gearbox, like the Renault Kangoo 1.3 TCe.

How do I maintain the gearbox in my Renault Kangoo?

To prevent problems with your gearbox, we strongly recommend that you change your transmission oil every 50,000 kilometers, and carry out quality checks. Regular maintenance ensures that your gearbox is well lubricated.

When stationary, stains on the ground may indicate a gearbox oil leak. It's essential to check regularly that the sump is watertight.

When should I repair the gearbox on my Renault Kangoo?

There are a number of signs that can help you spot a problem with your Renault Kangoo's gearbox, especially when you're driving. If, for example, you hear a cracking noise when shifting gears, or if a gear stalls or no longer engages, you need to take action.

How do I repair the gearbox on my Renault Kangoo?

Dismantling your gearbox

There are three main hypotheses to explain these problems:

  • gearbox not sufficiently lubricated ;
  • a worn clutch;
  • worn sprockets.

But to find the cause, you need to inspect the many parts that make up your gearbox. To do this, you must first remove the gearbox. In the case of the Renault Kangoo, this removal is complex: start by disconnecting the battery and removing the engine cover and battery. Then disconnect the connectors and remove the air-filter sleeve, as well as the battery shield screws and the two retaining screws.

Once the clutch cable has been disconnected and the bolts removed, lift the vehicle, remove the wheels and wheel arch covers, then uncouple the steering from the column and the hydropic hoses. Next, drain the gearbox and remove the linkage and dials.

Due to its weight, you'll need the help of a third party to dismantle the cradle. Finally, you can dismantle the gearbox support and remove it with the clutch.

Parts to check in your gearbox

In the case of a manual gearbox, you should note the following points in particular:

  • Drive shafts: check the gears and ensure that the primary, secondary and intermediate shafts are well lubricated;
  • The synchronizer ring: check that the houses (the ring's "teeth") are still well formed, and check for wear with a feeler gauge. Finally, check that the ring still has its original shape and is not damaged;
  • SPI seals: these seals ensure the tightness of the assembly, as well as the movement. They should be replaced at the first sign of wear. Before fitting a new SPI seal, coat it with a little oil;
  • Bearings: check bearings and sprockets for corrosion.

This initial check should enable you to assess whether your Renault Kangoo gearbox needs changing, or whether certain parts need replacing. However, Renault Kangoo gearbox removal is complex, and warning signs should not be taken lightly: the expertise of an automotive professional is always invaluable.

Repair or replace the entire gearbox? Only a professional will be able to make a reliable diagnosis and tell you whether or not you need to change your gearbox. There's no need to buy your gearbox directly from a garage: you can buy it independently, and often more cheaply!
