Citroën Berlingo: How to repair a faulty gearbox

The Berlingo follows in the footsteps of the famous C15, a van launched in 1984 that continues to criss-cross our countryside to this day: this model made its mark thanks to its legendary robustness.

In response to the great success of the Renault Kangoo, Citroën has constantly improved the Berlingo's practicality over the three generations of the vehicle, adding first one, then two sliding side doors.

Citroën Berlingo gearboxes sometimes show signs of malfunction: EDEN BOITES can help you identify and repair them.

How can I identify a fault in my Berlingo gearbox?

Knowing how the Berlingo works

First-generation models feature a five-speed manual gearbox only. From the second generation onwards, the automatic gearbox makes its appearance with six gears, then eight from 2018. This automatic gearbox can be found on both gasoline engines, such as the 1.2 PURETECH 130 S&S FEEL EAT8, and diesel engines, such as the 1.6 E-HDI 90 XTR BMP6.

BlueHDi technology, developed by the Stellantis Group, appeared in 2015 in versions 1.6 BLUEHDI 100 and 120 or 1.6 BLUEHDI 75: it was then considered the most efficient on the market for reducing pollutant emissions.

As with most minivans, all models of this vehicle use front-wheel drive: engine power is transmitted to the front wheels.

Watch out for warning signs

There are many symptoms of gearbox failure:

  • Unusual noises are usually the first warning signs. Cracking noises when shifting gears can indicate worn synchronizer rings;
  • A burning smell in the passenger compartment is often linked to an overheated transmission system. If the gearbox oil level is too low, or if its quality has deteriorated over time, the various parts are not lubricated properly and the system reaches too high a temperature;
  • Difficulty shifting gears may be due to faulty synchronizers, worn linkages or a defective clutch disc;
  • If you hear noise when your vehicle is in neutral, gear teeth, bearings or a reverse pinion may be worn.

A drop in the car's overall performance indicates that the gearbox is in an advanced state of deterioration: don't delay in contacting a mechanic to avoid irreversible damage to your vehicle.

Understanding the causes of gearbox failure

Gearbox components deteriorate over time: this is normal wear and tear resulting from daily use of the vehicle. Despite proper lubrication with transmission oil, regular friction can lead to the gradual deterioration of some parts, such as synchronizer rings and bearings.

Nevertheless, certain behaviors can accelerate wear and tear on parts, and sometimes even seriously damage the gearbox: aggressive driving with sudden acceleration or braking, abrupt movements of the gearshift or clutch pedal,use of bumpy roads unsuited to the type of vehicle, or a heavy load exerting heavy pressure on the gearbox, for example.

Where can I repair my Citroën Berlingo gearbox?

A mechanic's opinion

When checking your Citroën Berlingo gear box at the garage, don't hesitate to describe in detail your observations and feelings during gear changes and while driving: this information will help the mechanic to identify the problem with your transmission system more precisely.

Possible repairs include, depending on the case :

  • seal replacement in case of oil leakage;
  • replacing the gearbox bearings if abnormal noises, vibrations or difficulties in manipulating the gearshift lever are observed;
  • repair of theclutch by changing the clutch disc or flywheel;
  • replacement of synchronizers, gear teeth and selector forks in the event of premature wear.

How to identify the box code?

Your mechanic's diagnosis is clear: your gearbox needs to be completely replaced. If you wish to order a new gearbox yourself, you must first correctly identify your transmission's gearbox code. This combination of numbers and letters is your gearbox reference number.

This check is essential, as visually identical gearboxes with the same number of ratios may be built differently and not be compatible with your vehicle. The gearbox code is usually engraved on the gearbox housing or on the clutch housing.

If you're in any doubt, EDEN BOITES can help you identify the part number using your vehicle's registration number or vehicle registration document: all you have to do is request a free, no-obligation quote online!
