Practical guide to a long-lasting Ford gearbox repair
A Ford gearbox problem is not unusual. Despite the fact that this car part is designed to last as long as the vehicle it is fitted to, many things can cause it to deteriorate. Neglecting regular maintenance can be as much to blame as harsh road conditions, bumps and driving style. The gearbox then shows signs of weakness: lack of responsiveness, skipping gears, inappropriate selection of automatic gears....

What are the different variants of Ford gearboxes?
Since its founding in 1903, Ford has produced hundreds of millions of vehicles in dozens of models. While some of these have not remained on the market for very long, others have undergone numerous facelifts and technical improvements so that successive generations can adapt to the demands of their time. This means that for a given model, there may be several types of gearbox, which is a major point of vigilance. Indeed, references are rarely interchangeable as they are designed to fit the specificities of particular models. You should therefore ensure that you know what type of gearbox your Ford is fitted with so that you can search for a compatible product for a possible replacement.
The Ford Transit gearbox is available in a number of variants depending on the engine, generation and trim level chosen. On the latest models in the range, the Ambiente trim is equipped with a 2.0 EcoBlue diesel engine, available in four power levels (105hp, 130hp, 130hp HDT Euro VI and 170hp). This trim level comes as standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The BVM6 is also found on the 130hp to 185hp 2.0 EcoBlue units in the Trail trim.
The Trend Business trim level is also equipped with a 2.0 EcoBlue diesel engine with power ratings ranging from 105 hp to 185 hp. Several types of transmissions are available. The BVM6 is combined with 105 hp, 130 hp, 160 hp, 170 hp and 185 hp. Depending on the model you drive, the 130 hp, 160 hp, 170 hp and 185 hp blocks can also be supplied with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The range is further enhanced by BVA10, which is available on certain 170 hp HDT Euro VI models with Trend Business trim.
If you are driving a vehicle with the Limited trim level, the 130 hp mHEV and 185 hp engines can be coupled with a 6-speed automatic depending on the model. For the 130hp, 160hp, 170hp and 185hp engines, the transmission may be a 6-speed automatic. Finally, a 10-speed BVA is available for the 2.0 EcoBlue 170 hp HDT Euro VI.
If you are interested in the Ford Transit 2.4 tdci 115hp gearbox of the generation marketed until 2011, note that it is a mechanical 6-speed model.
Maybe it's the Ford Fiesta gearbox that's giving you a hard time. From 1989 to 2017, the manufacturer favoured the standard BVM5. This is for example the type of Ford Fiesta 1.4 tdci 68 bhp gearbox and Gearbox Ford Fiesta 1.6 tdci 90 bhp or 95 bhp. However, the models are diversifying from 2008. For example, an optional BVA4 is offered with the 1.4L 96hp engine. From 2013 onwards, the range expands with the appearance of a BVA6 that can be coupled with the 1.6L Ti-VCT 105hp and 120hp units, as well as the 1.5L Ti-VCT 112hp unit. For the generation produced from 2017 onwards, the Fiesta 's gearboxes are a standard BVM5 or BVM6, with BVA6 available as an option depending on the version. Since 2021, a BVA7 Powershift is optionally available with the Ecoboost Hybrid block. The BVM6 remains the standard transmission.
The first generation Ford Ka gearbox and the Ford Ka 2 gearbox is a mechanical model with 5 speeds. It is standard on the Gearbox Ford Ka 1.2 and all other engines. Since 2014, Ford has offered the 6-speed Powershift automated transmission as an option on the 1.5 Ti-VCT petrol engine.
If you are considering repairing or replacing a Ford Focus gearbox, there are several types to choose from. As with other versions of the 1998 factory generation, the Ford Focus 1.8 tddi gearbox is a BVM5 which is also the standard Ford Focus 1.6 tdci gearbox from 2004. The Ford Focus 1.6 16v gear box is also a 5-speed manual.
The Gearbox Ford Focus 3 1.6 tdci is a BVM6, with this type of transmission being introduced from 2004. It is the same 6-speed mechanical model that comes as standard as Gearbox Ford Focus RS MK2.
For the latest generation, the manufacturer has chosen to retain the mechanical gearbox. As an option, the Focus MHEV FLEXIFUEL E85 can be delivered with the Ford Focus Powershift 7-speed automatic gearbox .
The Gearbox Ford Fusion tdci as well as the one coupled to the petrol units are 5-speed mechanical models. In fact, the Ford Fusion gearbox has changed very little, with the BVM5 remaining the standard over the generations. However, major changes have been made to the latest models in the range. The Gearbox Ford Fusion 8-speed automatic comes as standard with the latest 2.0L EcoBlue diesel. The hybrid petrol unit is paired with an ECVT BVA.
You may be experiencing problems with a Ford Ranger gearbox. This pick-up is produced in different versions, which differ in design, equipment choice and, above all, in the engines.
If the fault concerns a 2007 Ford Ranger gearbox, you will have to look for references compatible with a super cab or a regular cab. As standard, the manufacturer has chosen a BVM5. A BVA5 is offered as an option on most engines. As for the Ford Ranger 4×4 gearbox, it is either a BVM6 as standard or an optional BVA6. The latest generation Raptor is powered by a 213bhp 2.0 EcoBlue engine, coupled to a 10-speed Ford Ranger automatic transmission. For the chassis cab version, Ford has opted for a BVM6 to support the 170hp 2.0 EcoBlue engine.
We would like to remind you that by regularly changing the Ford Ranger gearbox, you can avoid a large number of Ford Ranger gearbox problems because the components of the transmission are saved from premature wear. The need to maintain the gearbox obviously applies to other vehicle models.
The type 9 gearbox is a 5-speed mechanical model. If you are looking for a standard exchange Ford Sierra type 9 gearbox or a used Ford Sierra type 9 gearbox, you will have to choose a BVM5.
The types of mechanical and automatic transmissions we have just presented are the main models found at Ford. They are associated with several references. The one that suits your vehicle is stamped in the form of a numbered and/or lettered code on the casing. Make sure you identify this part number, as incompatibility can lead to further breakdowns in your vehicle.
How to repair Ford gearbox?
It is only logical that you should be in a hurry to find a solution, knowing that a malfunctioning gearbox considerably reduces the mechanical performance and reliability of your vehicle. However, you must remain methodical and prioritise quality over speed of repair.
You will certainly find many tutorials explaining how to overcome a Ford Fiesta gearbox problem, how to solve a problem GearboxFord Fusion or how to react to an anomaly GearboxFord Fusion, for example. The problem is that this information is global. It does not address the differences in the construction of the various gearboxes found on Ford-built vehicles. Nor does it offer any relevant information on how to identify the precise source of the malfunction. However, it is important to note that different faults can result in the same symptoms. If you make a mistake in the repair method, the problem may become more serious.
For this reason, we only recommend that a qualified professional carry out any type of repair.
Let's assume that you have recently had a Ford Fiesta 1.4 tdci gearbox change. However, you hear suspicious noises or the gears shift with some difficulty. Lubrication problems persist when the sump is punctured, causing theFord Fiesta gearbox to leakoil. The problem may also be due to the advanced state of wear of certain components, preventing the mechanism from operating at its best. If you are experiencing problems with a Ford Fiesta automatic gearbox, it may need to be reconfigured or the transmission may need to be replaced.
Let's take another example with a transmission failure in a Ford Ka. When you park, you notice oil on the ground. It is obvious that there is a leak. If the Ford Ka gearbox has been changed recently, the mechanic will simply refill it so that the lubricant reaches the level recommended by the manufacturer. If it has been a long time since the last oil change, it is generally preferable to change the oil again while repairing the cause of the leak.
Another situation is that your Fusion transmission is making suspicious noises. This may be due to a broken Gearbox Ford Fusion cable. However, it could be the Gearbox Ford Fusion linkage that is worn or broken. In the latter case, it is common for the noises to be accompanied by difficulty in engaging manual gears. The noises may also be due to insufficientoil GearboxFord Fusion or a faulty Ford Fusion gearbox oil change.
These types of faults and solutions are only examples. We mention them to illustrate that repairing a gearbox is complex and that it is essential to call in a professional. The latter has the necessary know-how to take care of your vehicle. In addition, professionalism comes with a guarantee that the repairer will ensure the quality of his work.
