Gearbox operation
How does the transmission system work?
The transmission system is a complex ecosystem, starting at the gearshift and ending at the vehicle's wheels. Its various components include :
- The primary shaftis the link between the engine and the gearbox;
- The secondary shaftwhich distributes the power received to the vehicle's wheels via the drive shaft;
- Bearingswhose role is to ensure the correct rotation of these shafts;
- The differentialallows speeds to be distributed to the left and right wheels;
- Synchronizerswhich lock the gears together;
- Selector forkswhich lock in the desired gear by locking the corresponding pinion on the secondary shaft.
What makes the Skoda Roomster so special?
In its eleven years of existence, divided into two phases from 2006 to 2010 and 2010 to 2015, the Skoda Roomster features two types of engine. The petrol engine, initially offered in a 1.4L version for 85 bhp, then in a 1.6L version for maximum power of 105 bhp; and the TDI diesel engine with power ranging from 75 to 105 bhp.
The transmission remains on the entire range: the power supplied by the The power supplied by the engine is transmitted only to the vehicle's front wheels, which are the only ones to be driven.
Two gearbox options are available. The manual version remains the most popular, with 5-speed gearbox. In fact, it's the only option available with a diesel engine. A sequential version is also availablewith up to seven gears: the vehicle has no clutch pedal, and the driver shifts the gears in sequence via a steering-wheel-mounted control. As its name suggests, the sequential gearbox does not allow the driver to skip a gear when accelerating or downshifting.

Gearbox failure rarely happens without warning. Warning signs should not only alert you alert you to the presence of a problembut can also inform you of its origin. Among the most common symptoms are :
- Squeaking and rubbingespecially when shifting gears. This usually indicates deterioration of the synchronizers or sprockets;
- A whistling sound indicates premature bearing wear;
- Jumping gears means that the gears are not locked properly: the problem then lies with these gears or with the selector fork;
- Resistance at the clutch pedal or gearshift is probably due to wear of the clutch release bearing or incorrect adjustment of the control cables;
- A burning smell is often a sign of insufficient transmission oil, or of advanced oil degradation.
Gearbox removal and disassembly
Some repairs are relatively simple and can be carried out with little mechanical knowledge, provided you have the right tools. Examples include gearbox oil changeThis operation is recommended every 250,000 kilometers for the Skoda Roomster, but can be carried out earlier depending on the vehicle's profile and type of use.
In the event of a more complex problem, only the diagnosis of a professional mechanic can ensure that you're on the right road. Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that a repair is out of the question, because the gearbox is in too advanced a state of deterioration.
