BMW from 1999 to 2024: before and after the N-series families, the sales method is not chosen in the same way

On BMW vehicles produced before 2012, the M47, M57 and their variant blocks (M47D20, M57D30, 306D1, 306D2, 306D3) had often accumulated very high mileages. When the block is mechanically beyond use but the original unit is still available and in good structural condition, rebuilding the customer's own unit — we recondition the customer's part and return it to them — makes perfect sense: the customer retains their exact reference, which simplifies identification and avoids compatibility issues related to sub-variants. On more recent generations (N47, N57, B47, B57, B58, N55, N20 families, from 2008 to 2024), exchange meets the majority of cases, as these families are well represented in stock.

Three part families, different identification logic

The BMW catalogue covers engines, gearboxes and transfer cases. For engines — which account for the largest share — the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable starting point: a single model such as the 3 Series or X3 received 2.0d blocks with distinct codes (N47D20A, N47D20C, N47D20D, B47C20A, B47D20, B47D20B) depending on the year and emissions standard, each corresponding to a different architecture. For gearboxes, the 3 Series and 5 Series account for the bulk of the 6-speed manual range. For transfer cases — fitted to the X1, X3, X4, X5 and X6 — the manufacturer reference or ATC code (e.g. ATC45L) remains the most reliable identifier.

Most covered models and engines

The 3 Series and 1 Series are by far the most represented, followed by the 5 Series, X1 and X3. On the engine side, the 2.0d is by far the most widely covered, available across several generations of blocks. The 3.0d covers premium and SUV applications (N57D30A, N57D30B, N57D30C, B57D30, up to the 335d 3.0 Biturbo and M50d). The petrol blocks N55B30A, N20B20A and B58B30A complete the range for the 2.0i and 3.0i. For entry-level engines (1.5i, 1.6i, 1.5d, 1.6d), the engine code — B38B15A, N47D16A — is all the more important given that these capacities appear across short-run generations with few variants.
