Peugeot from 1991 to 2026: two sales methods depending on whether the part is in stock or belongs to a rare generation

For the majority of models in this range — 308, 3008, 208, Partner, Expert, Boxer — the reconditioned part is available on an exchange basis: the customer sends in their old unit and receives the rebuilt part in return. However, certain older generations (306, 106, 205, J5, 806) or less common engine variants produce volumes too low to maintain a rolling stock. In these cases, rebuilding the customer's own unit is the logical route: the original unit is reconditioned and returned to its owner. The choice between the two methods therefore depends on the model, year and engine variant — not on any commercial preference.

Gearboxes and engines: two equally represented families, but genuine identification pitfalls

The Peugeot range covers as many bare engines as gearboxes. On the gearbox side, the selection spans 5- and 6-speed manuals through to automated manual gearboxes BMP5, BMP6 and ETG6 as well as the 2-Tronic. The BMP5 and BMP6 automated manual gearboxes are sold without actuator — an important technical point to bear in mind before placing any order. On common diesel engines — 1.6 HDi, 2.0 HDi, 1.5 BlueHDi — several engine codes exist for the same engine capacity: a 1.6 HDi may be a 9HW, 9HX or 9HP, and these codes do not share the same associated gearbox. The same logic applies to petrol units: the 1.2 PureTech covers distinct codes (EB2F/HMZ, EB2DT/HNZ…) whose internal specifications differ. On the Boxer and Expert, the larger diesel units — 2.2 HDi, 2.8 HDi and 3.0 HDi — follow their own code tree (4HU, 4HV, 4HH, 4HK…), independent of passenger car units.

Narrowing your search by model and application

The Boxer alone accounts for the largest volume in the range, followed by the 308 and the Expert: these are the areas where the widest choice of references is available. For high-mileage light commercials — Boxer, Expert, Partner — the engine code stamped on the block is critical, as several mechanical generations have been fitted to the same bodyshell. For petrol city cars and compacts (208, 207, 206, 106), the engine code stamped on the block's identification plate remains the only reliable reference to avoid a gearbox compatibility issue. Models with limited representation in the range (4007, 1007, 107, Traveller) almost always fall under the customer's own unit rebuild route.
