Why does the turbo on an Opel city car or van not face the same stresses as one fitted to a saloon or SUV?

Opel's turbocharged range covers very different uses: a Corsa or Meriva in urban driving strings together cold starts, short trips and engine shut-offs with no cooling-down period — conditions that rapidly degrade the lubrication of turbo bearings. At the other end of the scale, an Insignia 2.0 CDTI 170 hp (engine codes B20DTH, D20DTH) used on motorways runs the turbo under sustained load, exposing the actuator and seals to greater thermal fatigue. The Vivaro or Movano in commercial use combines both: heavy loads, short cycles and oil that is often changed late. Before fitting any replacement, identifying the root cause of the failure — EGR fouling, a blocked diesel particulate filter, a degraded oil circuit, an ingested foreign body — is essential to avoid a rapid recurrence.

Opel engine families: one model, several possible turbos

The most common identification pitfall across the Opel range stems from the longevity of its platforms. The Astra, the most widely represented model here, received 1.7 CDTI engines across several generations with distinct engine codes: Y17DT, Y17DTL, Z17DTL on the 65 to 80 hp versions, then Z17DT, Z17DTH on the 100–101 hp versions, and finally A17DTJ, A17DTR, Z17DTJ, Z17DTR on the 110 and 125 hp versions — each family corresponds to a different turbo despite an identical engine capacity. The 1.3 CDTI also comes in several output levels: code Z13DTH for the 90 hp, Z13DTJ for the 75 hp, Z13DTE, A13DTE, A13DTR on the 95 hp. On the 1.6 CDTI, the codes B16DTC, B16DTE, B16DTL, B16DTN, B16DTU, B16DTH, D16DTH, D16DTJ are not interchangeable. Only the engine code stamped on the block provides a reliable identification; the stated power output alone is not sufficient.

Petrol and diesel turbos: symptoms not to be confused

Turbocharged petrol engines — 1.4 Turbo (A14NEL, A14NET, B14NEL), 1.6 Turbo SIDI (A16SHT, A16XHT, B16SHL, B16SHT) and 1.6 Turbo OPC (Z16LET) — feature fixed-geometry turbos with a wastegate, whose failure typically manifests as a sharp whistling noise or a sudden loss of power under load, sometimes accompanied by white smoke. On variable-geometry diesel engines, a faulty actuator can cause hesitation or limp-home mode with no particular noise. All turbos offered in this collection are new, with manufacturer references and equivalences available on each product page.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Opel.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Opel?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
