Reconditioned Hyundai Gearbox

The engine code stamped on the Hyundai block determines the compatible gearbox, not the engine capacity

On a Hyundai, the engine capacity shown in the commercial name is not enough to identify the correct reconditioned gearbox. The 1.6 CRDi is paired with the code D4FB, the 1.7 CRDi with D4FD, and the 2.0 CRDi can come with either a D4EA or a D4HA — two distinct blocks with different mechanical interfaces. On the petrol side, the 1.6 covers four engine codes: G4ED, G4FD, G4FJ, G4GR, depending on the generation and model. It is therefore the code stamped on the block — not the commercial name — that allows the correct gearbox reference to be matched.

Which models and engines are covered

The collection covers eleven Hyundai models produced between 2004 and 2023: i30, Tucson, i20, ix35, i10, i40, Kona, Santa Fe, Trajet, Coupé and ix20. The available gearboxes are exclusively 5- or 6-speed manuals, sold on an exchange basis or rebuilt using the customer's own unit. On the diesel side, the engines covered range from the 1.1 CRDi (D3FA) — found notably in the i10 — through to the 2.0 CRDi of the Santa Fe and Trajet. On the petrol side, the smaller 1.0 (G3LA), 1.0 T-GDI (G3LC) and 1.0 T-GDI 100 Mild Hybrid (G3LF) units are distinguished by their codes: G3LC and G3LF do not share the same gearbox despite their similar names.

Common identification pitfalls across the Hyundai range

The main stumbling block concerns the 2.0 CRDi: D4EA and D4HA do not belong to the same engine family and do not take the same gearbox. An ix35 and a Santa Fe can both show "2.0 CRDi" in the catalogue yet require entirely different parts. The same care applies to the 1.0 T-GDI in the Kona and i20: the move to the Mild Hybrid version introduces the code G3LF in place of G3LC, with a specific gearbox to match. On the 1.2, G4LA (i10, i20 older generations) and G4LF (1.2 MPI, more recent generations) refer to different blocks. Before placing any order, locating and noting the engine code on the block remains the only reliable check.
