The ix35 compact SUV places different demands on its gearbox compared with a standard saloon

Designed to handle urban roads, dual carriageways and varied terrain alike, the ix35 subjects its transmission to a far more diverse range of operating cycles than a family saloon: frequent gear changes through the lower ratios in town, extended cruising in 5th or 6th on the motorway, and occasionally the added load of a tow bar or a fully laden boot. On a vehicle of this size, a worn gearbox typically makes itself known through difficulty engaging 1st or reverse, crunching on clutch release, or a gear lever that refuses to slot cleanly into 3rd. These symptoms are characteristic of an end-of-life gearbox on diesel variants, which are put under particular strain by the engine's torque from low revs.

Three engines, two diesel codes, one gearbox type

The ix35 sold between 2010 and 2015 was fitted exclusively with 6-speed manual gearboxes, regardless of engine. The 2.0 CRDi diesel uses the D4HA block, the 1.7 CRDi diesel uses the D4FD, and the 1.6 petrol uses the G4FD. These three codes correspond to distinct gearboxes: the references for the 2.0 CRDi (notably 4300024AAM, 4300024AAN, 4300024930) are not compatible with those for the 1.7 CRDi (4300026400D), nor with the petrol version. The engine code stamped on the block is therefore the essential starting point for identifying the correct unit, before any other checks are carried out.

Two ways to handle the part, depending on your situation

The ix35 gearboxes available on this page are offered under two distinct arrangements: sending your own gearbox away for reconditioning and having that same unit returned to you, or receiving an already-reconditioned gearbox as a direct replacement. The first option is the right choice when your gearbox has a specific service history or configuration you wish to retain; the second suits situations where the vehicle needs to be off the road for as short a time as possible.
