Reconditioned Hyundai i20 Gearbox

i20: 5-speed on standard petrol engines, 6-speed on the diesel and the 1.0 T-GDI mild hybrid

On the Hyundai i20 covered here (2012–2023), the transmission is exclusively manual — no automatic, no dual-clutch, no automated manual. The choice therefore comes down to the number of speeds: 5-speed for the majority of petrol engines, 6-speed for the 1.1 CRDi diesel and the 1.0 T-GDI 100 Mild Hybrid. These two gearbox families are not built to the same dimensions and cannot be swapped for one another, even where the engine appears similar.

Identifying the right gearbox for your engine

Three petrol engines share the 5-speed gearbox: the 1.2 (G4LA), the 1.2 MPI (G4LF), and the 1.0 T-GDI (G3LC). G4LA and G4LF are two distinct engine codes corresponding to two variants of the 1.2: the associated gearboxes differ, and part references do not cross over. The 1.0 T-GDI (G3LC), without any hybridisation, also takes a 5-speed — not to be confused with the 6-speed fitted to the 1.0 T-GDI 100 Mild Hybrid (G3LF), which is part of the mild hybrid drivetrain. On the diesel side, the 1.1 CRDi (D3FA) is fitted with a 6-speed gearbox specific to that engine. Identification via the engine code stamped on the block is essential before placing any order: two i20s from the same model year and the same stated engine capacity can take incompatible gearboxes.

Gearboxes in this collection are available in three ways: standard exchange, standard exchange with rebuild to 0 km, or reconditioning of your own unit. The latter option involves sending in your original gearbox to be reconditioned and returned to you — useful when the exact reference is difficult to source, or when you wish to keep your own unit.
