19 Citroën models, one 1.6 HDi: why the engine code matters more than the engine capacity

Across Citroën models produced between 1998 and 2026, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct engine. The 1.6 HDi is the clearest example: this single engine designation covers codes such as 9HX, 9HW, DV6ATED4, DV6BTED4, DV6DTED, DV6FC_BHZ, DV6FDU_BHV as well as T1DA and T3DB — units from different generations, fitted to vehicles as varied as the C3, C4, Berlingo and Jumpy, and not interchangeable with one another. The same logic applies to the 2.0 HDi, which spans more than twenty-five distinct codes (AHZ, RHK, RHW, TXWA, UBGA, UFBA…) depending on the variant and the year of the vehicle.

Engine families: PSA-Ford diesel, PureTech and THP — the three essential reference points

The diesel range is built around two main architectures. The DW units (DW10, DW12) cover the 2.0 HDi and 2.2 HDi found notably in the C5, Jumper and Spacetourer; the DV units (DV6, DV5) power the 1.6 HDi, 1.6 BlueHDi and 1.5 BlueHDi in the C3, C4 and DS3. The transition from HDi to BlueHDi (Euro 6 standard) introduced specific codes — DV5RCF_YHT, DV5RC_YHZ, AHK for the 2.0 BlueHDi 120/122 — which share no internal components with earlier generations, even where engine capacity is identical.

On the petrol side, the 1.2 PureTech spans no fewer than eleven codes (EB2ADTS, EB2ADTX, EB2ADT_HNP, EB2DTS, EB2DT_HNZ, EB2FA_HMR, EB2F_HMT, HM01, HN01, HNY…) depending on power output and generation, whilst the 1.6 THP comes in EP6CDT_5FV, EP6DTS_5FF and EP6FDT_5GZ variants — three versions fitted to the DS3, DS5 or C4 depending on the period. Before ordering a reconditioned engine, the code stamped on the block (or shown on the registration document in field P5) is the only reliable identifier; the stated engine capacity and power output alone are not sufficiently specific.

Light commercial vehicles: Jumper, Jumpy, Berlingo — specific units not to be confused with passenger car variants

The Jumper alone accounts for the majority of 2.2 HDi references in the range, with codes specific to heavy-duty use (4HG, 4HH, 4HJ, 4HU, 4HV, P22DTE…). These units share their architecture with certain Ford Transit and Fiat Ducato versions of the same generation, but their internal calibrations differ. The Jumpy and Berlingo diesel models are fitted with DW10 or DV6 units in light commercial vehicle specification, whose torque outputs sometimes differ from those fitted to C4 or C5 saloons carrying an apparently identical code. On these vehicles, checking the full code — not just the engine family — is the only way to avoid any risk of incompatibility at the point of fitting.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Citroën engine cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Citroën engine compatible with my exact model?

We offer 215 references covering the main Citroën models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact engine for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original engine rebuilt in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
