Opel Engines from 1998 to 2025: Before and After the Shift to Shared Units

Until the mid-2000s, Opel fitted its models with in-house engines — the Z-family units found in the Astra, Corsa, Zafira and Meriva. From around 2010, the brand gradually moved to engines co-developed or shared with Renault (the M9R and R9M series in the Vivaro and Movano, and the F9Q family in the 1.9 CDTi), then, following the acquisition by PSA, to PureTech and DV5 units in the Crossland and Grandland. This shift has a direct impact on how engines are identified: the same model — the Astra, for instance — can conceal entirely unrelated engine code families depending on the generation.

Which Engine for Which Model: Identification Pitfalls You Need to Know

On the 1.6 CDTi, R9M codes (R9M408, R9M409, R9M415, R9M450, R9M452 and their variants) coexist alongside codes B16DTE, B16DTH and D16DTH on the Astra K and Insignia: these engines are not interchangeable, and the code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference. On the 2.0 CDTi, M9R codes (M9R630 through M9R7M7) cover the Vivaro and Movano, while codes A20DT, A20DTH, A20DTJ and A20DTR are fitted to the Insignia and Astra J: same engine capacity, entirely separate families. The 1.9 CDTi (Z19DT, Z19DTH, Z19DTJ, F9Q-670, F9Q-750, F9Q-760, F9Q-762, F9Q-772, F9Q-774) was fitted to the Astra H, Zafira B and Vectra C; the final letter of the code distinguishes variants with different power outputs and engine management systems. On the petrol side, the 1.2 and 1.4 ran across several generations of the Corsa, Agila, Adam and Meriva, with A, B or D prefixes (A12XEL, B12XER, D12XER; A14XER, B14XER, D14XER…) each corresponding to a distinct generation — a D-prefix unit does not replace an A-prefix one.

Exchange or Rebuild: What Guides the Choice for an Opel Engine

For the vast majority of engine variants — 1.7 CDTi, 1.4 Turbo, 1.6 CDTi, 2.3 CDTi on the Vivaro and Movano — exchange is the straightforward route: a reconditioned engine is dispatched and the original block is returned. Rebuilding the customer's own unit makes sense when the block is rare, difficult to source on an exchange basis, or when it carries modifications or an atypical configuration that a standard exchange cannot replicate: certain 3.0 CDTi units (ZD3200, ZD3202) on the Movano, or 2.2 CDTi blocks (Y22DTR) with low numbers in circulation, fall into this category. In every case, the engine code stamped on the block determines feasibility: it must be legible and provided before any order is placed.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Opel engine cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Opel engine compatible with my exact model?

We offer 176 references covering the main Opel models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact engine for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original engine reconditioned in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
