1.4 Turbo or diesel: which engine block did the Mokka actually get?

The Mokka (2012–2019) spans four engine capacities, but the petrol/diesel divide conceals a variety of engine codes that must be untangled before placing any order. On the petrol side, the 1.4 Turbo is the most common unit, with six variants listed in the catalogue: A14NET, A14NEL, B14NET, B14NEL, D14NET and D14NEL. These six codes represent successive evolutions of the same turbocharged four-cylinder; they are not mechanically interchangeable and cannot be substituted for one another without prior verification. The 1.6 naturally aspirated (code A16XER) is a minor presence in the range and is represented by just a single reference.

Diesel side: two distinct families despite similar engine capacities

The diesel engines are split between the 1.6 CDTi and the 1.7 CDTi, which do not belong to the same engine family. The 1.7 CDTi covers four codes (A17DTS, A17DTJ, A17DTE, A17DTC) and was fitted to the early production years of the Mokka; the 1.6 CDTi, introduced later, comes in five variants (B16DTL, B16DTU, B16DTE, B16DTH_LVL, D16DTH_LVL). Confusion between the two is common: a 100 cm³ difference is rarely enough to tell the blocks apart visually, and certain vehicles with the same quoted power output received one or the other depending on their exact model year. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference for identifying the correct part to order.

Key points to watch on these engines

The 1.4 Turbo in the A14NET/B14NET series is known for abnormal oil consumption on certain model years, typically linked to piston rings or valve stem seals. The 1.7 CDTi (A17DT family) has, on some versions, known weaknesses with the timing chain. These failure points are the root cause of the engine damage that makes replacement necessary. All engines in this range are offered as a bare engine: ancillary components (turbo, alternator, starter motor, etc.) are not included and must be transferred from the old unit or ordered separately.
