Kia Gearboxes from 2001 to 2023: How Diversifying Uses Multiplied the Configurations

Between 2001 and 2023, the Kia range sold in France shifted from a narrow, homogeneous line-up to a family of models with very different purposes: the Picanto and Rio built for city driving, the Sportage and Stonic as versatile SUVs, the Sorento and Carnival designed for heavy loads and high mileages, and the Ceed and Venga for everyday mixed use. This diversity of use has a direct impact on the gearbox: greater thermal stress in urban driving, high torque demands on diesel SUVs, and short, frequent cycles on city cars. Replacing a gearbox on a Sportage 2.2 CRDi is a completely different job from replacing one on a Rio 1.2, even if both are reconditioned manuals sold on an exchange basis.

Diesel or Petrol, 5 or 6 Speeds: Gearbox Families by Model

The range covers ten Kia models, with just two configurations: 5-speed manual and 6-speed manual. No automatic or dual-clutch gearbox is listed here. The diesel units are centred on engine codes D4FB and D4FE (1.6 CRDi, Sportage, Ceed, Venga), D4FD and D4FDL (1.7 CRDi, Rio, Ceed), D4EA and D4HA (2.0 CRDi, Sportage, Carens), D4HB (2.2 CRDi, Sportage, Sorento) and J3 (2.9 CRDi, Carnival). Petrol units range from the G4LA (1.2, Picanto) through G4FA (1.4) and G4FC, G4FD and G4FG (1.6), as well as G3LC and G4HE on the 1.0. The 1.0 T-GDI uses either the G3LC or G3LE code: two distinct codes for the same turbocharged engine capacity, depending on the generation of Stonic or Rio in question.

Identification Pitfalls to Watch Out for on the Kia Range

The Sportage alone accounts for seven different references: a single model name covers multiple generations, several diesel engines (1.6, 2.0, 2.2 CRDi) and model years ranging from 2004 to 2023. The commercial engine name is not enough — the engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point. On mid-generation CRDi units, D4FB and D4FE coexist across closely related years with gearboxes that are not interchangeable. Likewise, the Ceed is fitted, depending on the version, with either the 1.6 CRDi (D4FB/D4FE) or the 1.7 CRDi (D4FD/D4FDL): the same body, but different gearboxes. The Soul, Carens and Carnival each appear only once or twice in the range: for these less common models, verifying the engine code before placing any order is even more critical.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Kia gearbox cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Kia gearbox compatible with my exact model?

We offer 26 references covering the main Kia models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact gearbox for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original gearbox rebuilt in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
