5- and 6-speed manual, MultiMode: three Toyota gearbox families, two reconditioning approaches

With Toyota, the choice between an exchange unit and rebuilding your own part is not a trivial one. Exchange suits common models — Yaris, Corolla, Auris, RAV4 — where stock levels of reconditioned units allow for a quick turnaround. Rebuilding your own gearbox makes more sense for less widespread or low-volume models: Land Cruiser 4.2 TD (1HD-FTE), Hilux 2.5 D-4D (2KD-FTV) or 3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV), Urban Cruiser, and even certain Proace versions fitted with DW10 units with PSA coding. When a suitable exchange core is hard to come by, having your own unit reconditioned and returned is often the most reliable route.

Identification pitfalls: the engine code alone is not always enough

The 1.8 petrol is a good illustration of the difficulty: two distinct engines were fitted to the same displacement across different generations. The 1ZZ-FE (1794 cm³) was fitted to the Avensis T22 and T25 up to 2008, whereas the 2ZR-FE and 2ZR-FAE (1798 cm³) took over on the Avensis T27 from 2009 onwards and on the Corolla and Auris of the same period. A 4 cm³ difference and a generational shift that changes the gearbox reference entirely. The same care is needed with the 2.0 D-4D: six engine codes coexist (1AD-FTV, 1CD-FTV, DW10CD, DW10FC, DW10FD, DW10FE), depending on whether the engine is of Toyota origin or a PSA/Ford unit fitted to the Proace or certain Avensis models. The 1.6 diesel follows the same logic with codes DV6FC and DV6FD, specific to PSA-architecture versions.

MultiMode: an automated manual without its actuator

The MultiMode gearbox — found notably on the Yaris and Aygo — is a 5-speed manual with automated control. It is sold without the actuator (electro-hydraulic unit), which is a separate reference. A common symptom on this family: jerky gear changes or refusal to engage, often wrongly attributed to the mechanical gearbox when the actuator is actually at fault. Identifying the exact source of the fault before placing an order avoids a costly misdiagnosis. The 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes cover the bulk of the range — from the 1.0 (1KR-FE) on the Aygo to the 2.2 D-4D (2AD-FHV, 2AD-FTV) on the Avensis and RAV4 — and account for the vast majority of references available in this collection, from 1998 to 2024.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Toyota gearbox cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Toyota gearbox compatible with my exact model?

We offer 61 references covering the main Toyota models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact gearbox for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original gearbox rebuilt in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
