Dacia gearboxes changed family with each engine generation, not with each model

From 2004 to the present day, Dacia's transmission line-up has evolved in step with engine developments rather than body facelifts. An early Logan fitted with a K7J or K7M shares nothing in terms of gearbox with a phase 2 Sandero equipped with the K9K or H5F. The Duster uses the same engine families as the Sandero or Lodgy over the same period, which means that a change of engine generation — not model — is the real watershed date to bear in mind when identifying the correct gearbox.

K9K, K4M, H5F, H4B: four engine families, four distinct gearboxes

The 1.5 dCi accounts for the majority of diesel references. Behind this single engine capacity lies a series of highly varied K9K codes — K9K 612, K9K 792, K9K 856, K9K 872, K9K 894, among others — not all of which take the same gearbox. The year of first registration and the exact code stamped on the engine block are the two parameters that must be cross-referenced before placing any order.

On the petrol side, three generations coexist in the catalogue. The older 1.4 (K7J) and 1.6 (K4M, K7M, H4M) come with a 5-speed manual. The 1.2 TCe (H5F) introduces the 6-speed on more recent versions. The 0.9 TCe (H4B) and the 1.0 (B4D, H4D) make up the most recent generation, found in particular on the Sandero III and Duster from the later years of the range covered. Confusing an H5F402 with an H5F408 or an H5F410 can lead to a reference error: these variants correspond to distinct applications.

Recurring points to watch across the Dacia range

The Duster deserves particular attention: certain 4x4 versions have a transfer case in addition to the main gearbox, and the references are not the same as those for the 4x2 Duster with an identical engine. The Dokker and the Lodgy, although mechanically close to the Sandero on the same engines, may have different axle ratios depending on the payload or the number of seats. All the gearboxes listed here are manuals — 5 or 6 speeds depending on the engine — available on an exchange basis or as a rebuilt-to-0-km exchange unit.
