23 Volkswagen models, a gearbox that wears out at the same weak points

From the Lupo to the Amarok, from the Golf to the Arteon, the Volkswagen range spans more than four decades — 1981 to 2024 — and at least five transmission families: 4-, 5- or 6-speed manual, DSG 6, DSG 7. What these vehicles have in common is a recurring pattern of faults. On the DSG 7 (DQ200), the most commonly reported symptoms are juddering in town, refusal to engage first gear from cold, and jerking in reverse — signs of a failing mechatronic unit or wet clutches nearing the end of their life. The DSG 6 (DQ250), more robust by nature, can nonetheless suffer from vibration on pull-away and slipping under high load. On manual gearboxes, the 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI are well known for premature wear of the 3rd and 4th gear synchronisers, particularly on the Golf, Transporter and Caddy at the high mileages typical of commercial use. These failures frequently result in a complete gearbox replacement rather than a partial repair.

Identifying the right gearbox: the engine code is essential

Volkswagen regularly fits several different gearboxes to the same engine, depending on the year of production, power output and model. The 2.0 TDI alone covers more than thirty distinct engine codes — AZV, BKD, CBAB, CJAA, CFFB, DFFA and many others — which do not necessarily share the same gearbox. A 1.4 TSI may be fitted with a 5-speed manual or a DSG 7, depending on whether the code is BLG, CAVA or CZEA. On the 1.9 TDI, codes AFN, ALH, AXR or BLS correspond to different years and power outputs that directly determine the gearbox type. Mixing up two similar codes on the same engine capacity means ordering an incompatible part.

DSG supplied with a new dual-clutch assembly, automated manual without actuator

An important technical point to be aware of before ordering: DSG gearboxes (6- and 7-speed) are supplied without the mechatronic unit but with a new dual-clutch assembly. Automated manual gearboxes of the Shiftmatic type are supplied without the robot unit or actuator. Both configurations exist within this reconditioned Volkswagen collection; please check which applies to your vehicle before confirming your order. For less common models such as the Corrado, the LT or the Amarok, the engine code and year are the only reliable means of identifying the correct reference — the 2.3, 2.5 or 2.8 TDI engines fitted to these models are not interchangeable with petrol families of the same engine capacity.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Volkswagen gearbox cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Volkswagen gearbox compatible with my exact model?

We offer 783 references covering the main Volkswagen models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact gearbox for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original gearbox rebuilt in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
