Reconditioned Volkswagen Scirocco Gearbox

The Scirocco is a hard-driven sports coupé: its gearbox takes everything that most hatchbacks never encounter

Unlike a city car whose gearbox works mainly at low revs in urban traffic, the Scirocco is driven very differently: sharp acceleration, rev-matched gear changes, twisting roads. Between 2008 and 2017, this compact coupé was fitted with up to three distinct gearbox architectures — 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7 — depending on the engine and year of manufacture. This is no minor detail: a DSG 7 from the 2.0 TSI (engine code CCZB or CBBB) cannot be substituted with a DSG 6, even with the same engine capacity.

Choosing the right gearbox for your engine

The 1.2 TSI (CBZB) is only available with a 6-speed manual. The 1.4 TSI (CAXA / CAVD) accepts either the 6-speed manual or the DSG 7. The 2.0 TDI (CFHB) is available with a 6-speed manual or DSG 6. The 2.0 TSI spans all three types: DSG 6, DSG 7 and 6-speed manual coexist depending on power output and year. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable starting point to avoid a reference error — example references (RKC, QYX, NBX, PRL…) vary precisely according to that code.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: two different mechanisms, two different wear patterns

The DSG 6 (DQ250) is a wet-clutch gearbox — robust under hard use but susceptible to clutch wear in repeated stop-start urban driving. The DSG 7 (DQ200) runs dry: it is more sensitive to thermal shock and harsh gear changes during spirited driving. On a Scirocco used regularly on open roads, the typical signs of a tired DSG 7 are juddering in 1st gear and hesitation at low revs. DSG gearboxes are supplied without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch. Two reconditioning options are available depending on the condition of your original unit.
