Scirocco 2008–2017: 6-speed manual or DSG – the gap between engine variants is wider than it appears

The Scirocco III spans a single commercial generation, from 2008 to 2017, yet the range of transmissions on offer evolved considerably over the years. The first versions launched in 2008 already gave buyers a choice between the 6-speed manual and the DSG 6, before the DSG 7 gradually became established across several engine variants. The result: the same model year can feature two radically different gearbox architectures depending on the engine chosen.

Four engines, three gearbox families: the combinations you need to know

The 1.2 TSI (CBZB) is the only engine with a single transmission option: the 6-speed manual only, with no automated alternative. The 1.4 TSI (CAXA or CAVD) also comes with the 6-speed manual, but can also be paired with the DSG 7 depending on the engine code and year — CAXA and CAVD are not matched to the same gearboxes, which makes the engine code essential for correct identification. The 2.0 TDI (CBBB or CFHB) covers both the 6-speed manual and the DSG 6. The 2.0 TSI (CCZB) is the only engine to bring together all three families: 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7, giving it the widest scope in the Scirocco range and explaining why it accounts for the greatest number of available references.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: two architectures that cannot be swapped for one another

The DSG 6 (DQ250) is a wet dual-clutch gearbox designed for high torque, fitted to the 2.0 TDI and the 2.0 TSI. The DSG 7 (DQ200) is a dry dual-clutch gearbox, lighter in construction, deployed on the 1.4 TSI and the 2.0 TSI. The two gearboxes are mechanically incompatible and their failure symptoms differ. DSG units are supplied with a new dual clutch, without the mechatronic unit: if the mechatronic unit is faulty, it must be dealt with separately. For vehicles whose original unit can be reused, rebuilding the customer's own unit is an alternative to an exchange.
