Scirocco III diesel or petrol: two engine families, nine years of evolution

The Scirocco III, produced from 2008 to 2017, existed only in this third generation, yet its engine range evolved significantly over that period. On the diesel side, the 2.0 TDI is represented by the engine code BMR in the early years, then by the codes CFHA and CFHF on later model years — three distinct codes for the same engine capacity, which makes identifying the correct unit essential before placing any order. On the petrol side, the 1.4 TSI comes in three variants: CAVA, CAVB and CAVD, corresponding to different power outputs (122 hp, 160 hp) and distinct forced-induction configurations — supercharger only, or supercharger combined with a turbo, depending on the code.

Locating the correct engine code on a Scirocco

On the Scirocco, the four-letter engine code is stamped directly on the block, typically on the gearbox side. It is this code — not the year alone or the stated power output — that determines which bare engine is compatible. A 160 hp 1.4 TSI may take a CAVB or a CAVD depending on the year of manufacture and original specification; these two codes do not refer to the same block. The same logic applies to the 2.0 TDI: the BMR (introduced at launch) has a different architecture from the CFHA and CFHF, which were brought in during the model's production run. Checking this code before taking any further steps is the only way to avoid an incorrect reference.

Known weak points on these engines

The Scirocco's 2.0 TDI, the BMR in particular, is known for premature crankshaft failures and camshaft issues linked to insufficient lubrication — a well-documented weakness across several VAG Group models sharing this block. The twin-charged 1.4 TSI (CAVB/CAVD) can suffer timing chain wear and timing chain faults at higher mileages. In both cases, a reconditioned bare engine replaces the entire internal mechanical assembly but not the ancillaries (turbo, injection system, alternator, etc.), which must be reused or replaced separately depending on their condition.
