Eight engine codes across three engine capacities on the Touran: why this detail changes everything

On the Touran produced between 2010 and 2015, three engine capacities are listed in the range, yet they break down into eight distinct engine codes — and that is where correct identification becomes critical. The 2.0 TDI alone covers four codes (CBDA, CBDB, CFHB and DGDA) corresponding to different, non-interchangeable units. The same applies on the petrol side: the 1.2 TSI comes in CBZA, CBZB and CBZC, three variants produced through successive technical revisions. Only the 1.9 TDI — code BXE — is unambiguous, as its code is unique within this range. Ordering a bare engine without knowing the exact code is a risk: you may receive a unit that is incompatible at the point of fitting.

How to locate the correct code on your Touran

The engine code is stamped directly on the block, typically on the side of the cylinder head or at the bottom of the sump. It also appears on the V5C registration document under field D.2, and in the service history or OBD diagnostic report. On the 2.0 TDI in particular, the power output alone is not enough to distinguish between units: CBDA and CBDB have distinct internal architectures despite an identical engine capacity, which rules out any order based solely on the engine designation shown.

Diesel or petrol: two families with different wear profiles

The TDI units in the Touran — whether the 1.9 or the 2.0 — most commonly accumulate high mileages associated with mixed family use, with frequent short urban journeys that place considerable strain on the powertrain. The symptoms leading to bare engine replacement are often linked to piston ring wear, a cracked cylinder head, or a failure in the oil circuit. On the 1.2 TSI side, the three codes CBZA, CBZB and CBZC share common structural components, but their valve timing and thermal management characteristics differ: here again, only the engine code guarantees an exact match.
