Rebuild or replacement: which option for the Touran gearbox?

The answer depends primarily on the engine and gearbox in question. On the Touran (2003–2015), the majority of diesel configurations — notably the 2.0 TDI and the 1.6 TDI — can take a DSG 6 or a DSG 7, as well as the 6-speed manual. These DSG gearboxes, sold without the mechatronic unit but with a new dual-clutch, are parts whose availability varies depending on the generation and the exact engine code. When a reference that precisely matches the vehicle's engine code is difficult to source, rebuilding the original unit — whereby the customer's own gearbox is reconditioned and returned to them — becomes a viable alternative. Petrol engines (1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI, 1.5 TSI, 1.6, 1.6 FSI, 2.0) and the 1.9 TDI are only available in manual, which simplifies identification but does not eliminate the risk of confusion between engine codes.

Engine codes: the real identification criterion

The Touran covers 29 engine codes referenced in our catalogue, from the BKC to the DPCA, including AZV, BMM, CFHC, CAYB, CAYC and CBZB. The same 1.6 TDI can be paired with a CAYB or a CAYC, and these two codes do not necessarily take the same gearbox. On the 2.0 TDI, the codes BKD, AZV and BMM correspond to different generations, with gearboxes that are incompatible with one another. The number stamped on the gearbox casing remains the final verification reference, but it is the four-letter engine code — visible on the registration document or on the block itself — that determines the correct reference from the outset.

Diesel or petrol: what the parts breakdown reveals

The volume of references is heavily concentrated on diesel engines: the 2.0 TDI alone accounts for the majority of available parts, followed by the 1.6 TDI and the 1.9 TDI. On the petrol side, volumes are considerably lower, particularly for the 1.5 TSI and the naturally aspirated 2.0. This breakdown reflects the reality of the Touran fleet on the road: a predominantly diesel vehicle, often used as a family car with high mileage, which explains the frequency of DSG gearbox failures under intensive urban use. For petrol engines with a low volume of references, rebuilding the existing unit is often the quickest route.
