Exchange or rebuild: which option suits your Touran, depending on the gearbox and engine?

The answer depends first on what you have under the bonnet. The Touran spans the 2003–2015 period with nine distinct engine variants — petrol and diesel — and four transmission types: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, DSG 6 and DSG 7. This wide range means that the same commercial designation ("1.6", "2.0") can conceal gearboxes with no parts in common, depending on the year or engine code.The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier for pinpointing the correct reference.

Exchange suits the majority of cases: the reconditioned unit is dispatched directly. Rebuilding your own gearbox, on the other hand, makes perfect sense when the reference is rare or highly specific — typically a DSG 6 or DSG 7 on a 2.0 TDI or 1.6 TDI, where market prices are high — or when you want your own unit returned to you reconditioned, for example on a vehicle with a known history.

Diesel: from the all-manual 1.9 TDI to the 2.0 TDI across three gearbox families

The 1.9 TDI (codes BJB, BKC, BLS, BXE) was paired exclusively with the 6-speed manual throughout its production run. The 1.6 TDI (codes CAYB, CAYC), introduced later, opens up three possible transmissions: 6-speed manual, DSG 6 or DSG 7. The 2.0 TDI (codes AZV, BKD, BMM, CFHC) follows the same three-way logic. On DSG versions,the gearbox is supplied without the mechatronic unit but with a new dual-clutch assembly: this point directly affects the costing of a full repair at the workshop.

Petrol: five engine variants, 5- or 6-speed gearboxes, no DSG

The Touran's petrol engines — 1.6 (BGU, BSE, BSF), 1.6 FSI (BAG, BLF, BLP), 1.4 TSI (BLG, BMY, CAVB, CAVC), 1.2 TSI (CBZB, CBZC) and 1.5 TSI (DADA, DPCA) — are fitted exclusively with manual gearboxes. The 2.0 petrol (AXW, BLX, BLY, BVY, BVZ), present in low volumes, is paired with a 5-speed manual, which must be distinguished from the 6-speed manuals fitted to the other petrol engines. 5-speed and 6-speed gearboxes are not mechanically interchangeable, even at the same engine capacity: always check the exact designation before ordering to avoid an unnecessary return.
