Touran 1.6 TDI: the same diesel engine capacity, but 6-speed manual, DSG 6 or DSG 7 depending on the configuration

On the Touran 1.6 TDI (2010–2015), the engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the gearbox that needs replacing. Two engine codes coexist — CAYC and CAYB — and the vehicle can be fitted with 3 distinct transmissions: a 6-speed manual, a DSG 6 or a DSG 7. These 3 families are not interchangeable. The gearbox code stamped on the casing, combined with the engine code and the date of first registration, is the only way to determine the exact reference.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: two dual-clutch architectures, two different failure patterns

The DSG 6 (DQ250) is an oil-bath gearbox, more robust under heavy urban use but sensitive to contamination of the hydraulic circuit. The DSG 7 (DQ200) runs dry: it is known for juddering at low speeds and mechatronic unit failures — the mechatronic unit is not supplied with the gearbox. Both DSG versions are delivered without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch integrated. The 6-speed manual, by contrast, typically shows conventional synchroniser wear on the lower gears, with no associated electronic complexity.
