Renault: gearboxes, engines and turbos span very different engine families depending on the model and year

A Kangoo 1.5 dCi and a Master 2.3 dCi share no mechanical components whatsoever, even though both carry a Renault badge and a diesel engine. The first step is therefore to identify the engine family — K9K, M9T, M9R, F9Q, G9U or R9M — before even thinking about the model, because it is the engine family that determines which gearbox, turbo and bare engine are compatible.

The K9K dominates the city car and light van range, but its variants are numerous

The 1.5 dCi with K9K block is by far the most common engine in this collection — Clio, Mégane, Scénic, Kangoo, Trafic. The catch: between 65 hp and 110 hp, there are many code variants (K9K 700, K9K 704, K9K 636, K9K 802, K9K 872, among others), and they share neither the same gearbox nor, for turbos, the same mapping. A K9K 700 from a Clio II 65 hp does not take the same 5-speed manual gearbox as a K9K 636 from a Mégane III 110 hp. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference; engine capacity and quoted power output alone are not sufficient.

For the Master and Trafic vans — the two most represented models in this catalogue — the dominant engine is the 2.3 dCi with M9T block, ranging from 100 hp to 179 hp depending on the generation and payload. The codes M9T 670, M9T 706, M9T 716 and M9T 726 correspond to distinct 6-speed manual gearboxes. The older 2.5 dCi G9U and the 2.8 dCi (Iveco 8140 and S9W blocks) were fitted to earlier generations of the Master and Mascott; these families require identification by code before any order is placed.

Petrol engines, automated gearboxes and turbos: specific points to be aware of

On the petrol side, F4R (2.0) blocks are fitted notably to the Laguna and Mégane, while the 1.2 TCe based on the H5F covers the Clio IV, Captur and Mégane IV. The 1.3 TCe H5H — codes H5H 450, H5H 470, H5H 490 — appeared on the Kadjar and Mégane IV from 2017 onwards. The Quickshift gearbox (single-clutch automated manual) found on the Modus, Twingo and Clio is sold without the electrohydraulic actuator, which should be factored in when planning a replacement. The turbos listed in this catalogue cover K9K, M9T and M9R engines alike, in new or reconditioned versions; the turbo reference number depends directly on the engine code, not simply on the power output.

EDEN BOITES stocks Renault parts from 1991 to 2024, sold on an exchange basis or rebuilt from your own unit depending on the family. With three categories — gearboxes, bare engines and turbos — and models ranging from the Super 5 to the Talisman, including the Vel Satis and the Avantime, the most useful first step is to locate the engine code on the block before navigating to the relevant sub-category or model.
