Everyday diesel city car or heavily used SUV: two use cases, two replacement engine logics

A Micra or a Note is mainly used for short journeys, often in urban environments, with incomplete warm-up cycles that prematurely wear the piston rings and injection system. A Qashqai, X-Trail or Pathfinder takes on loads, mixed driving conditions and sometimes light off-road use, placing different demands on head gaskets and bearings. An NV400, Primastar or Cabstar, in intensive commercial use, racks up high mileages on diesel engines built to last but rarely spared. The nature of the use directly shapes the fault diagnosis and the choice of replacement engine: a unit sourced from a low-mileage vehicle does not have the same history as a reconditioned engine rebuilt to 0 km, and the distinction between an exchange unit and a rebuild of your own part addresses different situations depending on the condition of the original block.

K9K, M9T, M9R, R9M: four diesel families for distinct applications

The 1.5 dCi is the most widespread engine in the Nissan range: the Note, Micra, Qashqai, Juke, Pulsar and NV200 have all received it in numerous variants. The K9K family alone covers more than twenty distinct engine codes — K9K292, K9K430, K9K636, K9K646, K9K656, K9K700, K9K702, K9K704, K9K710, K9K734, K9K764, K9K770, K9K772, K9K774, K9K780, K9K790, K9K804, K9K806, K9K837, K9K846, K9K896 — corresponding to different power outputs and generations. Two blocks sharing an identical engine capacity are not interchangeable without checking the code stamped on the engine. The 2.3 dCi (M9T) is fitted to light commercial vehicles and large SUVs: the NV400, Primastar, NV200 and Navara. The M9T family comes in numerous variants (M9T672, M9T676, M9T678, M9T680, M9T686, M9T690, M9T692, M9T694, M9T696, M9T698, M9T870, M9T876, M9T890, M9T_704, YS23DDTT) depending on power output and emissions standard. The 2.0 dCi (M9R) was fitted to the Qashqai and X-Trail between approximately 2007 and 2013, with codes M9R721, M9R750, M9R760, M9R786, M9R788, M9R7E7, M9R7M7, M9R802, M9R830, M9R832, M9R833. The 1.6 dCi (R9M) appeared on the Qashqai and Juke from 2013 onwards: R9M408, R9M409, R9MA4A4, R9MMD, R9MME and R9M_414 are its variants. On the petrol side, the 1.2 DIG-T (HR12DDT, HRA2DDT) and the 1.3 DIG-T (HR13DDT) cover the recent generations of the Juke, Micra and Qashqai.

Older diesel blocks: 1.9 dCi, 2.5 dCi, 3.0 dCi and 2.8 TD

The range also covers older engines found on vehicles that have been in circulation since the 1990s. The 1.9 dCi (F9Q) — codes F9Q-670, F9Q-750, F9Q-760, F9Q-762, F9Q-772, F9Q-774 — was fitted to the first-generation Primastar and X-Trail. The 2.5 dCi from the Navara and Pathfinder is found under codes G9U-750, G9U720 and YD25DDTI, the latter two corresponding to distinct architectures. The 3.0 dCi (ZD30DDTI) was fitted to the Patrol, and the 2.8 TD (RD28T) corresponds to older-generation Patrol and King Cab models. For these blocks, identification by the stamped engine code is essential: confusing variants leads to mechanical incompatibility. All engines are supplied as bare units, without ancillaries.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Nissan engine cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Nissan engine compatible with my exact model?
