K9K, M9R, R9M: 19 engine codes for the Qashqai, and well-documented weaknesses

On the Qashqai from 2007 to 2019, it is the 1.5 dCi based on the K9K that accounts for the vast majority of engine replacement requests — and with good reason. This family alone spans 19 distinct engine codes (K9K292 to K9K896), each corresponding to a specific revision of the block. Recurring symptoms on these diesel units are well known: EGR valve clogging causing hesitation and power loss, oil pump failure on high-mileage versions, and, on certain later codes, fragility of the high-pressure injection system. When these failures reach the block itself — worn piston rings, cracked cylinder head, oil-fuel contamination — replacing the bare engine becomes unavoidable.

2.0 dCi and 1.6 dCi: M9R and R9M blocks with very different profiles

The 2.0 dCi (codes M9R830, M9R832, M9R833) is fitted mainly to the earlier generations and four-wheel-drive versions. This 2.0 block is more structurally robust, but its turbocharger and injectors place greater demands on the lubrication circuit; degraded oil accelerates bearing wear. The 1.6 dCi (R9M_414) appeared later; its chain-driven timing system is a known point of concern on this type of Renault-Nissan engine. These two units share no parts whatsoever with the K9K family: the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference to avoid ordering errors.

Petrol engines: HRA2DDT and HR13DDT for the DIG-T

Petrol versions of the Qashqai are less commonly replaced, but their blocks have their own specific issues. The 1.2 DIG-T (HR13DDT) is known for abnormal oil consumption linked to piston ring wear on certain production runs, which can lead to premature engine failure. The 1.3 DIG-T (HRA2DDT), developed in partnership with Mercedes-Benz and introduced towards the end of the model's production run, has a different profile; real-world feedback on this block is still far more limited than on the K9K. In all cases, the engine is supplied as a bare unit: ancillary components (turbo, alternator, starter motor) are not included.
