Reconditioned Nissan Qashqai Engine: exchange or rebuilding your own unit – which option should you choose?

The answer depends first and foremost on the engine. The Qashqai produced between 2007 and 2019 came with five engine options — three diesels (1.5 dCi, 1.6 dCi, 2.0 dCi) and two petrols (1.2 DIG-T, 1.3 DIG-T) — but availability varies considerably. The 1.5 dCi alone accounts for fourteen K9K engine code variants, which means exchange stock is significantly broader for this unit. By contrast, the 1.2 DIG-T (HRA2DDT), the 1.3 DIG-T (HR13DDT) and the 1.6 dCi (R9M_414) each have only a single referenced code: if the customer's block is structurally sound, rebuilding their own unit can be a worthwhile alternative — particularly when the exact code is not immediately available in exchange stock.

2.0 dCi and the M9R family: four codes, and the importance of correct identification

The 2.0 dCi covers four codes: M9R, M9R830, M9R832, M9R833. These suffixes are not interchangeable: they correspond to distinct mechanical evolutions depending on the year of production and the vehicle version. Before placing any order, the code stamped on the block is the definitive reference — engine capacity alone is not sufficient to identify the correct engine.

1.5 dCi: fourteen K9K codes, generations that cannot be substituted for one another

On the 1.5 dCi, the K9K family evolved continuously between 2007 and 2019. The codes K9K 282, K9K292, K9K430, K9K636, K9K646, K9K656, K9K657, K9K764, K9K770, K9K772, K9K774, K9K837, K9K846, K9K896 refer to blocks from successive generations with genuine internal differences. A K9K770 cannot be substituted for a K9K846, even though both carry the commercial name 1.5 dCi. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier for selecting the correct reference.
