5 engine families, 19 engine codes: what Qashqai failures reveal about each unit

Between 2007 and 2019, the Qashqai was fitted with five engine families — two petrols (1.2 DIG-T and 1.3 DIG-T) and three diesels (1.5 dCi, 1.6 dCi and 2.0 dCi) — spanning 19 distinct engine codes. This variety is not without consequence: on this model, the engine code alone determines compatibility with the replacement part, regardless of the engine capacity shown.

1.5 dCi and 2.0 dCi: the warning signs before catastrophic failure

The 1.5 dCi (family K9K, 13 codes from K9K292 to K9K896) accounts for the vast majority of engine replacements on this model. Recurring failures affect the timing chain — premature stretching, cold-start noise — and the cylinder head, which is vulnerable to overheating when a faulty thermostat goes undetected. Abnormal oil consumption or persistent blue smoke are often early signs of worn piston rings or valve guides, well before any outright mechanical failure. On the 2.0 dCi (codes M9R830, M9R832, M9R833), crankshaft breakage and block cracking, though less common, are invariably fatal to the engine: partial repair is never an option at that stage.

1.6 dCi, 1.2 DIG-T and 1.3 DIG-T: identifying the correct code first

The 1.6 dCi (code R9M_414) is the most recent diesel in the range; its weak points are less well documented on the Qashqai, but the timing chain remains the common watch point across the entire Renault-Nissan family. On the petrol side, the 1.2 DIG-T (HRA2DDT) is known for oil consumption issues linked to the piston rings — a problem sufficiently well established to feature in several manufacturer recalls. The 1.3 DIG-T (HR13DDT) is the most recent engine in this overview; real-world feedback on it remains more limited. In every case, only the engine code stamped on the block can be used to select the correct part: two Qashqais with the same engine capacity and the same model year may carry different codes depending on the market or the production phase.
