18 Citroën models, three families of automated manual gearbox: where the faults are concentrated

On Citroën vehicles, gearbox failures don't all stem from the same cause. The automated manual gearboxes —SensoDrive and BMP6— found on the C2, C3 and certain versions of the C4 — are the most frequently reported: their electro-hydraulic actuator wears out under repetitive urban driving, resulting in jerky gear changes and, eventually, an inability to select certain gears. The ETG6, fitted to the C3 and C4 Cactus, displays similar behaviour. On the HDi manuals — 1.6, 2.0, 2.2 and 2.8 — the problem is different: it is the 2nd- or 3rd-gear synchromesh that wears prematurely, with difficult cold engagement as a classic early warning sign. A full replacement with a reconditioned gearbox often becomes the most reliable solution once these thresholds are reached.

Identifying the right part: the pitfalls specific to the Citroën range

The sheer variety of engine codes makes identification tricky. On the1.6 HDialone, codes range from 9HF to 9HZ, BHY, DV6FC and DV6FDU — each potentially corresponding to a different gearbox depending on the power output and generation of the vehicle. The same logic applies to the2.0 HDiwith codes RHH, RHK, RHR, RHT, RHV, RHW, RHY and RHZ: confusing two similar codes can lead to ordering an incompatible gearbox. On the1.2 PureTech(codes EB2DT, EB2DTS, EB2ADTS, HNZ…), the ETG6 automated manual gearbox sits alongside conventional manuals depending on the variant: the transmission type must therefore be confirmed before placing any order.

Light commercials — Jumper, Jumpy, Berlingo: gearboxes in a class of their own

TheJumper— with its 3.0 HDi codes F1CE0481D and F1CE3481E, or the 2.8 HDi 8140.43S — takes gearboxes of a fundamentally different design from passenger-car units: heavier-duty and dimensioned for high payloads. The Jumpy and Berlingo share part of their platform with the Peugeot Expert and Partner, which multiplies the possible cross-references: only the engine code stamped on the block, combined with the year and variant, makes it possible to pinpoint the correct reference. EDEN BOITES covers this entire range, from the Saxo and Xsara through to the Spacetourer, across model years from 1987 to 2026.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Citroën gearbox cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Citroën gearbox compatible with my exact model?

We offer 211 references covering the main Citroën models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact gearbox for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original gearbox rebuilt in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
